How do you feel about the House of Representatives' proposed slashing of funds for NPR and PBS?

During his presidential campaign, Bush assured us that cuts to National Public Radio and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting would be minimal at worst. As usual, it seems he was 'dissassembling'. The proposed cuts (planned for voting in the House this week) will cripple NPR and PBS. The cuts threaten programs like "All Things Considered," "NOW," "Sesame Street," "Fresh Air," "The Charlie Rose Show," "NOVA", and "Clifford the Big Red Dog." In an era of corporate media, public broadcasting is one of the last places you can find insightful journalism and educational content. Quality costs money, and corporate owners are too willing to sacrifice good programming to save a buck.

So, how do you feel about this?

I care - NPR and CPB are important forums for open discussion and education.
Couldn't care less: I never watch or listen to these programs.

Criminal. Seems to be a continuation of an ongoing strategy to stifle any outlets that might provide a perception different from theirs.

I think it's about time I don't get why we were funding it to start with. Aside from the left-ward lean there is the fact that the government has no business using my money to fund a tv channel. If I want my money going there I'll send it myself (goodness knows they are on there asking for it enough) & if we are going to support that why not FOX or ABC?

It just makes sense to cut public brodcasting so they can funnel more funds to FOX news.

As far as showing a different perception from theirs even a liberal can't seriously argue that the media & the telly aren't already slam full of the hollywierd left's beliefs.
We have a multi-day , multi-act concert in B,ham called City Stages, & this year we had at least one act out there that screamed f**k George Bush , before leaving the stage, too typical of the entertainment industry that controls our networks & nearly everything we see already(and we all know what a genius you must be to be an entertainer. Even putting politics aside, no one should be deciding to put the money that I work for (& leave my kids at daycare for) towards something like a tv channel except me.

& I bet if they did put money to fox the left would be jumping up & down.

Don't your kids watch Sesame Street, everygirl? Haven't you ever learned from historical series like Ken Burns or educational programs like Nature?

I don't consider this a left or right wing issue. What on earth has CPB or NPR got to do with 'Hollyweird'? They represent the opposite, if anything.

Whatever...

PBS sold out long ago anyway. Their programming has changed so much during the last couple of decades and they run commercials for exxon mobil and such all the time.

Hollywood leftist elite like: Arnold Swartzenheimer, Rob Lowe, Jay Leno, and whatever fossils are left from the Reagan bunch? Those liberal bastards!

They should cut other programs first. I doubt they even put that much money into NPR and PBS compared to the other waste. I listen to NPR and would support them if the government (the people) didn't.

Bushy, the Dictator, won't be satisfied until all free expression in the US is done away with.

I think that the NPR/PBS should do one of two things (or possibly both) :

Compete freely

Have more beg-athons.

I don't like the idea of indoctrination by the government. I think it is propaganda pure and simple. They are not anymore fair or balanced than Fox News.

Cathexis you are hyperbolic.

It is the same argument for paycheck protection from union abuses.

I will make the same arguemnts the other way as well. Corporations shouldn't be allowed to give money to politically motivated crap unless they first get the consent of every stockholder.

I have the feeling if paycheck union protection coupled with stockholder dividend protection were implemented politics might be slightly better. Or not.
