Rove's public statements last night:

"Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers. Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war. Conservatives saw what happened to us on 9/11 and said we will defeat our enemies. Liberals saw what happened to us and said we must understand our enemies."

Response from Sen. Harry Reid (D), Nevada: "I am deeply disturbed and disappointed that the Bush White House would continue to use the national tragedy of September 11th to try and divide the country. The lesson our country learned on that terrible morning is that we are strongest when we unite together, that America’s power is in its common spirit of democracy and freedom.

“Karl Rove should immediately and fully apologize for his remarks or he should resign. The lesson of September 11th is not different for conservatives, liberals or moderates. It is equally shared and was repeatedly demonstrated in the weeks and months following this tragedy as Americans of all backgrounds and their elected representatives rallied behind the victims and their families, united in our common determination to bring to justice those responsible for these terrible attacks.

“It is time to stop using September 11th as a political wedge issue. Dividing our country for political gain is an insult to all Americans and to the common memory we all carry with us from that day. When it comes to standing up to terrorists, there are no Republicans or Democrats, only Americans. The Administration should be focused on uniting Americans behind our troops and providing them a strategy for success in the war on terror and the conflict in Iraq. I hope the president will join me in repudiating these remarks and urge Mr. Rove to take appropriate action to right this terrible wrong."

Rove is not interested in our country, just his agenda.
Rove is a great American.

Rove's a tool. If he really wanted to prevent this sort of thing from happening again, he should investigate the CIA, Mossad and the Saudi royal family.
by _Beelzebubba on Thu Jun 23, 05 4:40pm [+]

Well he's right, that's exactly what happened. But he should stick to calling american soldiers nazis, that way no one will be offended.
by herzog on Thu Jun 23, 05 4:42pm [+]

Mojo, your question employs "Karl Rove" and "thinking" in the same sentence--perhaps the first time that has ever been done.
by elvislennon on Thu Jun 23, 05 4:43pm [+]

Did you people not happen to see the legions of leftwing nuts who came out immediately after 911 and said we mustn't condemn these people before understanding them? America deserved it, we should walk a mile in their shoes? None of that ring a bell? It was only a few years ago, you ought to remember.
by herzog on Thu Jun 23, 05 4:43pm [+]

herzog, do you believe that a political spokesperson should further divide a nation in a time of war? How does that serve the morale of the country - or our soldiers?
by mojo on Thu Jun 23, 05 4:45pm [+]

He shouldn't lie to avoid stepping on some toes. And I don't seem to remember you complaining when various democrats attacked conservatives and US soldiers as fundamentalists, idiots, child killers, rapists, etc. Compared to that a simple statement of fact is nothing.
by herzog on Thu Jun 23, 05 4:48pm [+]

p.s. I admire Durbin for his apology - did you happen to catch that? It would be nice to hear one from the other side every now and then.
by mojo on Thu Jun 23, 05 4:48pm [+]

Child killers?? That's rich. The 'right' has been slinging that name at the 'left' since Roe V. Wade.

Gotta go, life calls.
by mojo on Thu Jun 23, 05 4:50pm [+]

Rove is the evil heart of the Chimp administration. He has no moral values, whatsoever. He'll do, or say, anything that will bring him a benefit. Fortunately, people seem to be learning what a degenerate group of people are pulling Bushy's strings, as is indicated by George's falling approval ratings and the desertions taking place in Republican Party. Not to mention the dwindling support for Chimpy and Rummy's manhood war in Iraq.

Harry Reid refuted scumbag Rove's hate-speech beautifully.

And mojo, as for Zerhog, he's just a lying nazi-boy. He's not worth anyone's time.
by cranky on Thu Jun 23, 05 5:10pm [+]

Zerhog:

Go read mojo's article #366
"Jenna? Barbara? Your war is waiting." It's all about YOU, baby.
by cranky on Thu Jun 23, 05 5:24pm [+]

this is what is wrong with the political climate in this country. herzog you say, "He shouldn't lie to avoid stepping on some toes."

thats the problem. he should know better and be more tactful. there is a way to say something and a way not to. he chose his words poorly, as did durbin.

and as for his stance that conservatives chose war, how has that helped us? lets be honest here, we knew something big was coming and yet we chose not to examine how we could prevent it by taking a look at our foreign policy. might does not always make right and as teddy roosevelt said, 'walk softly, but carry a big stick." bush and his team are thumping around like oafs.

you know that ultimately, i support the usa without a doubt, but we really should ask why this happened and see what part our behavior makes the terrorists have the wrong impression about us.

rove was wrong to say this and our government leaders should leave the political rhetoric and bullshit off the table for a while.
by Kev24 on Thu Jun 23, 05 5:30pm [+]

And they wonder why there are those of us who criticize their every word, thought and deed. If it isn't obvious that they're serving their own ends and willing to use any means to do it, then I'm officially Canadian.
by Truthseeker013 on Thu Jun 23, 05 5:43pm [+]

Hey HerGoz, when are you going to enlist--I think there's a slot in the Texas Air National Guard. Great uniforms--they come with a yellow streak down the back.
by elvislennon on Thu Jun 23, 05 6:13pm [+]

Whoa, he actually SAID that?! He's president Bush's chief political strategist! If he's incapable of acknowledgeing that he made a serious mistake with that comment (even if only for the sake of his reputation, and the reputation of the president), he should either be fired or have his toungue cut off at the root, leaving nothing more than a small bit of pink flesh flapping around uselessly in the back of that slimey throat of his. What a moronic asshole.
by Applerod on Thu Jun 23, 05 6:27pm [+]

Good point elvislennon--herzog why don't you enlist? Do you volunteer for any veterans stuff--the vet's hospitals always need help. Most homeless shelters are full of our brave heros. You could help feed them soup.
by weebles48 on Thu Jun 23, 05 6:56pm [+]

Rove is declaring War, all right, but it isn't on Terrorists.

He'd best be careful what he wishes for.
by Cathexis on Thu Jun 23, 05 7:06pm [+]

Why apologize for being honest? You people are nuts, you defend freedom of speach for Dean, then attack Rove? The truth hurts, huh?

Great, another cranky alias, just what this site needs.
by herzog on Thu Jun 23, 05 11:40pm [+]

Actually herzog, I was glued to the TV after 9/11, and the only person I heard say that 'America deserved it' was Jerry Falwell. There was a unanimous response to his obscene speech, and it crossed party lines.

The only 'good' thing about 9/11 was that it brought the whole country together...don't you remember?
by mojo on Fri Jun 24, 05 8:19am [+]

* Of course, I was living in D.C. at the time; maybe things were different where you lived.
by mojo on Fri Jun 24, 05 8:20am [+]

Mojo: are you serious? You didn't hear the legions of leftwing asshats coming out afterwards blaming the US? I find that hard to believe.
by herzog on Fri Jun 24, 05 9:01am [+]

C'mon Zerhog,

It's time for you, and all your rightwing aliases, to get your fat ass out from behind your computer and goosestep on down to the recruiting office and join the military. Quick, do it now! Bushy needs you!
by cranky on Fri Jun 24, 05 9:43am [+]

herzog: What about the legions of Democrats who are currently serving in the Armed Forces? Isn't that a slap in the face to them?

And yes, despite rhetoric to the contrary, there are a fair number.
by Cathexis on Fri Jun 24, 05 11:56am [+]

Yes, herzog, I am serious. Guess I wasn't plugged in to the same media sources as you. I watched the Big Three and C-SPAN. I also read the Washington Post and TIME magazine.

I don't mean to sound corny, but in my neck of the woods it was like a love-fest. Everyone was grieving, everyone wanted to talk about it (even strangers in the street); it wasn't a partisan thing. But, I live within 8 miles of the Pentagon, so close that we felt the explosion there in our house.
by mojo on Fri Jun 24, 05 1:19pm [+]

And Herzog, how did you feel about Falwell's and Pat Roberton's little tirade?
by mojo on Fri Jun 24, 05 1:31pm [+]

'herzog: What about the legions of Democrats who are currently serving in the Armed Forces? Isn't that a slap in the face to them?'

Not really. If they agree with these people and think the US deserved it then they'd be offended. But if they feel that way I don't really give a shit about offending them. Otherwise they should agree with me, these guys are assholes and should be ridiculed.

And BTW, you don't seem to mind criticizing conservatives, don't you worry about offending the even greater number of conservatives serving in iraq?

Mojo: I guess we weren't watching the same news. And falwell and robertson are idiots. Anyone who claims the US deserved it is an asshat of the highest order.
by herzog on Fri Jun 24, 05 5:14pm [+]

WHAT. WHAT! WHAT!!!

ROVE? KARL ROVE?????

WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN. FROM HOWARD DEAN TO CHARLIE RANGEL AND DICK DURBIN AND ROBERT BYRD HAVE YOU BEEN ASLEEP??

ARE YOU THAT INCREDIBLY AUDACIOUS THAT YOU WOULD DARE TO LAY THIS AT ROVE'S FEET.

BULLCRAP.
by inter_regnum on Sat Jun 25, 05 3:00am [+]

**SIGH** Rove was thinking what he was actually thinking. He has a right to speak his opinion just like Durbin had the right to speak what others wanted him to say. Both Rove and Durbin needn't be pushed to apologize. They can both speak their minds. This apology crap is starting to get silly.
