Yup, Merck is spending big money to show how generous it is with those who might not be able to afford the high cost of its medications (and advertising).

In this TV ad, people are shown in various situations: riding a bus, at a public laundromat, loading firewood into an old pickup truck, and swimming in a large crowded community pool. Message? If you can't afford your own car, washer/dryer, central heating, or (heaven forbid!) a swimming pool, you might just be poor enough to qualify for the Merck patient assistance program. God forbid you should contact them if you're just a middle class working person who can't afford any health insurance.

Can we give those good, philanthropic folks at Merck some more ideas for settings that depict poverty for their ads?

People sleeping in their cars.
Folks in a trailer park, planting veggies.
A guy on the street with a begging cup.
A bag lady sleeping in a library.
A person bleeding profusely outside an ER they've been turned away from.
Bum outside of a theater covered in dog feces
junkie hookes on Merck's drugs
Bleeding two-year-old gunshot vics
Granny trying to grow her own meds bein' arrested!

I guess "having to wash your own Lexus" wouldn't fit, huh?

You're still the one, you're suffering from cancer
Still the one, you're bleeding to death faster
Merck's still having fun, because you're still the one.

DARN! Cathexis, NOW I know why I haven't been able to qualify! Think if I drove the Range Rover down to my next appointment, they'd let me slide?

These ads remind me of the Philip Morris ads warning people of the dangers of smoking. Pretty Merchy waters here.

Merck, like the other pharmaceuticals, is not interested in finding cures for diseases - only patenting drugs to treat the symptoms. If they actually found cures, they'd be out of business.
