Four major unions decided Sunday to boycott the AFL-CIO convention, setting the stage for one or more to bolt from the 50-year-old federation in a battle over how to reverse organized labor's decades-long decline. Does this signify the beginning of the end of the corrupt organizations, or can they bounce back from this and be more unethically stronger than ever?

This signifies the beginning of the end
they will bounce back even more corrupt

COMMENTS:
The sad thing is that these unions aren't doing this for the right reason. If they were getting together to discuss how their members are making too much money based on the current economy (there is NO WAY ANY fork lift driver should make 40 dollars an hour and get 5 weeks paid vacation a year, sorry) then I would believe there is hope for unions, but no, they are greedy, they are shady, they are pathetic, and despite being one of the better progressive elements of the early business/industrial movement in this country, unions do more to hurt the economy these days than help.

Tsk ... another jenny17-style ballot.

I would hope it is an end to corruption, yes. But I doubt it.

As to the end of unions and the implication that the concept of Unions are corrupt ... all I can do is sigh and ignore you.

Hopefully this will lead to less corruption in the unions, this of course would be good for labor and consumers. But to really fix the problem, the government needs to repeal laws that compel companies to deal with unions.

"Grossly corrupt labor unions"?!?!? Look, jenny17 -- don't generalize like that, and don't talk about something you very clearly don't know about. Labor unions exist to keep workers in safe conditions and ensure that the workers get a fair wage. Both my parents have benefitted -- and conversely the quality of my life while growing up was bettered -- as a result of unions. My parents are hardworking middle-class citizens, and they're union members because unions provide protection, a check and balance against the bosses of the company. Basically you're implying that unions -- the only thing protecting US workers from the tyranny of their bosses -- shouldn't exist, and that working-class people should be slaves to the rich? Is that what you're implying, you dumb worthless brainwashed bitch? Because if you are, you are the stupidest, most weak-minded person in the entire history of B&W. Think for yourself, expand your horizons, don't buy everything that governmental and GOP propaganda tells you, READ INTO VARIOUS THINGS, and for criminy fucking sakes, don't speak about something if you don't fucking know about it. Fuckin' A, this is the dumbest thing I've ever seen, and I take personal offense to the idea that unions are inherently bad, if you haven't gotten that impression anyway -- and judging by your level of intelligence, you haven't and probably never will.

IF IT WEREN'T FOR UNIONS WE WOULD STILL BE WORKING IN SWEAT SHOPS.
THERE IS STRENGTH IN UNITY.
