It seems to me that they are always asking for money.

If you're sucessful, the pay and benefits are outstanding compared to working for a living.

Yes, it's just a business and all that matters is the bottom line
No, these people are making a sacrifice to help mankind
A little of both, though many abuse the privledge that comes with the occupation

I believe it is most often a matter of money and power. There may be some who are true ideologues, but most have the ideology only as a means for the money & power, IMO.

Good question.

I think some might initially join a cause because they sincerely believe they can make a change for the better, but then they become contaminated by the illuson of power.

Very few seem able to resist the cesspool of money and corruption.
Most become tools.
