WHAT IS MORE PATRIOTIC?

[+] serious ballot by seon
created Tue Jul 26, 05

What is more patriotic to love your country and believe in the bill of rights and the constitution that your forefathers fought and died for or to blindly follow the government and believe they know what’s best for us even when they’ve torn apparent the first 5 amendments?

Love of country, Bill of Rights, and Constitution

Don't we have these ballots every week? Some lefty tries to pat himself on the back and claim that arbitrarily protesting every action undertaken by a republican makes them a hero.

Patriotism these days consists of putting a Chinese-made "Support Our Troops" ribbon magnet on your Daewoo.

So Herzog I’m a lefty for believing in the bill of rights and thinking America is a great country?
by seon on Tue Jul 26, 05 8:23pm [+]

The Constitution and Bill of Rights, of course. They are very, very well thought out articles designed to protect the US, and what the US is SUPPOSED to stand up for, the citizen of the US. At the expense of govt. power. It makes me sad to see the way they are trampled on by the current govt. I honestly think that if the Founding Fathers were alive today they would secede from the Union the same as they did from England for many of the same reasons and more. And they would probably be called "leftys" too. LOL.

No seon, you're intentionally making yourself out to be some sort of victim, then claiming sainthood for nothing really.

Is it more patriotic to serve your country in the military, or stay at home and burn the american flag? Sounds kind of contrived doesn't it?

You can only be patriotic of something that deserves your patriotism.

It's hard to fathom where you come down on this question, Seon. #:>)

Most Americans would call themselves "patriotic." Of course, their definitions of the word would differ. And this is where it gets sticky.

For you, Seon, believing in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights trumps blindly following the government's lead.

The problem with your formulation of this argument is that it may be a false dichotomy: The "government" you speak of is elected to defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Supporting the government is not necessarily at odds with believing in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, but your ballot languaged implies that it is.

I do agree that it is important that we question our lawmakers when they seem to be doing things which are unconstitutional.

I do not agree that one has to decide between supporting the government or supporting the Constitution.

Patriotism is best served when there is an ongoing, healthy debate between different groups. The most important element of this, in my view, is the free expression of all these views.

When this debate is suppressed in the name of patriotism, all true patriots should be alarmed.

herzog it depends if you serve in the army to actually defend America (like in ww2 and ww1) that’s defiantly more patriotic then flag burning.
