COMMENTS:
Frist is running for president, so he wants to be on the side of the majority on this one. The sentiment of the American public is swinging even more strongly pro-stem cell research as time goes on. I think he's probably gambling that he'll get more votes by being pro-stem cell than he'll lose from the rabid fundamentalists. At this point, I'm not even sure an anti-stem cell research presidential candidate could get elected. Nancy Reagan gushed praise onto Frist for his flip-flop. This may be a shrewd move for him. In the past, the rightwing, fundamentalist extremists in the Republican Party have eventually knuckled under and supported the Republican candidate anyway.
I think I may have to take him off my List after this.
He's entitled to his opinion. I think America would be better off if politicians were willing to deviate from their party's official position.
No, but it makes him a smart politician. It distances him from the Bush Administration in the public mind at a time when the President is at his lowest popularity ratings ever, and he knows Bush will veto the bill he supports. A down note: This "change of heart" is cynical politics at its worst. Frist is a brilliant GWB: a President of nightmare proportions.
Should be interesting to see where the party aligns itself. In previous breaks from Official Party Line, they castigated the offender with Negative Ads ... even though the offender was a member of their own party. Should be interesting to see where the party shifts or doesn't.
