HAS RACE AND CLASS BEEN A FACTOR IN THE SLOW RESPONSE TO HURRICANE KATRINA IN NEW ORLEANS?

news related :
[+] serious ballot by FiddleFaddleOnLSD

Another user (not cranky) posted this option on another ballot and it has received a number of votes. Also, this has been mentioned by some newspaper columnists and bloggers.

Most of the people stranded in New Orleans are black, poor and elderly. Has race and class been a factor in the slow response?

COMMENTS:
I dont know for sure but if all those people standing on the side of the road were white I believe there would have been a better responce.

I just heard that said on CNN, I hope not, but who knows anymore.
The racial makeup of the city is 28.05% White, 67.25% African American, 0.20% Native American, 2.26% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.93% from other races,
i have a hard time accepting this. its not that i don't believe it -- it's that i don't want to. see, vote democrat in the future americans!
Just wait and see what happens in the next Federal election. Regardless of who's ultimately to blame for this, be it Republican or Democrat, political heads are going to roll and African Americans are going to remember this for decades.
^ though, some experts are saying that the high level of the water is a major factor that makes things more difficult, as well as the fact that when people were evacuated, they did not keep track of where everyone went on the local level. i'm not saying that makes it okay, but maybe there are extenuating circumstances involved that need to be factored in.
It's unlikely wealthy whites would have organized rape parties in the middle of a hurricane, or shot at police and aid personal as they were trying to work. So that has probably had an effect.
herzog, you can't blame all those people for what some have done
If for whatever reason wealthy americans found themselves on an interstate highway after a hurricane, it is unlikely they would have been left there for 4 days without water or food.
It was only a matter of time before someone would bring race into the subject and ask this question.
I saw a 98 year old women who was on that highway in the blazing sun without food and water, do you think they would have left Nancy Reagan laying there? Of course not
I don't know if it is a race thing, but maybe a class thing
They got troops into Iraq within 24 hours, but after 5 days, peopel are still dying from neglect.

You do the math.

Tens of thousands of stranded and desperate blacks:Government response: "What's the hurry?"

Tens of thousands of stranded and desperate whites:Government response: "We got an emergency here people!" Then everything worked as clockwork, little lose of life, very little delays in the delivery of food and water and everyone was back to work the following week.

Get real.

It's sickning.Any of you guys remember how quickly they responded when bunch of "million doller homes" got into muddy water In Laguna Beach Ca?
I think it has. CNN had a phone conversation with a female that was trapped in a hotel along with 300 other guests (I think they were all there together) She spoke of how the Nat'l Guard herded them up the street to the busses in groups of 40 and each group was surrounded by 4 or 5 guards with weapons drawn. I started to think she sounds rich because she said she stopped to help out a poor person to steer or hold on to a child loating in her container. The Rich old lady and was feared because the group had gone ahead but her determination to help the child outweighed her insecurity. She made it out alive! To think of all those storm troopers helping all those tourists out first, ain't that nice?
mybackhurts

A liitle bit different scales maybe 100,000 times smaller?

^ murster, they were staying in the ritz carlton. the hotel employees went into a walgreens and, as they put it, "comandeered" medical supplies. so its' comandeering if you work for or stay in the ritz carlton (mental note to self: stay in a ritz carlton and go to a mercedes dealership after closing time to "comandeer" a new merecedes for self).

that's the sick part --they came enmass to help the people in the ritz carlton. this is not a race thing -- this is a class thing. there should be no racial backlash, but there may be a class backlash. this is why anyone who struggles economically and is a republican-- wake up!!

^Kev24
How'd you just fix your comment? As you can see I could shurley benefit from that!

Personally I would put the whole situation down to shear incompetance before and after the hurricane. Heads should role for this outrage, but as always, its doubtfull that any will.
they will find a poor ambulance driver and blame him
^
sarcasm

from msnbc
Hyatt guests given priority
At one point Friday, the evacuation was interrupted briefly when school buses rolled up so some 700 guests and employees from the Hyatt Hotel could move to the head of the evacuation line — much to the amazement of those who had been crammed in the stinking Superdome since last Sunday.

Case closed.
^ that's disgusting, I agree. But it hardly accounts for the entire situation.
I normally don't see racism in things where many of my Black friends do, but I think this New Orleans flood situation is different.

I believe the authorities took forever to rescue people because they invisioned in their racist minds a bunch of inately uncivilised African savages looting, raping, and killing one another just as we have seen flashed across our TV screens recently in such far off places as Rhwanda, Zaire, Sudan, Ethiopia, etc., etc.. Ol' George W. probably figured just like George the Elder did during the Los Angeles riots that the best thing to do was "to let the niggers blow off some steam with a couple days of free looting, and by that time all the bad ones will have killed each other off. Then once everybody runs out of steam we can go in and mop up." By the way, if you remember this was the same strategy he employed in Baghdad, and most military experts agree that it was from that point forward we lost control.

However, getting back to New Orleans, what this fucking dickhead George W. Bush didn't understand was that the ENTIRE remaining populace of New Orleans was suffering and in deep peril if help wasn't sent in immediately. In the mean time, these no good rotten, racist, rich, Republican, white crackers sat on their asses watching FOX News thinking how "uncivilized" the niggers are, instead of putting 2 and 2 together that many good people were dying left and right.

Let me ask you all something: Is there one thing these two morons, Bush and Cheney, touched that they haven't fucked up?

^Halliburton Is doing quite well
Racism is a very natural, built-in thing, that most Politically Correct people wish were otherwise.
Nature made difrnt races: that's okay.
Birds of a feather do indeed flock together: THAT'S OKAY: it's just the way life is.
Hey, I HATE the fact the sky's blue, dammit, but there ain't a THING I can do about it.
It's okay to like those much akin to yourself, and it's okay to be suspicious against those UNlike yourself: it's a perfectly natural human response.
And when the common enemy arrives from outer space lookin verrrry unlike ANY of us humans, we'll bond together like we were all made of clear colourless glass, baby!
But for now, it's fun and cool to practice racism.
We do our INTELLECTUAL best to counter it, but it's one of those deep built-in things, like how I like the shape of a woman's nicely-rounded ass, and simply can't tear my eyes off it.
You need to read Desmond Morris' "THE NAKED APE", to find out who you really are.

Ask the Democrats

the only time they care about poor blacks (or any other race) is when they need votes for the Welfare Plantation.

^so, an opportunity, no matter the validity is the time to attack a particular person?

And when this person is no longer on the scene what then?

Instead of forming policies and putting forth ideas your time is spent in ways that will do you no service once this singular person is gone from the scene.

^ blah blah blah

the rapper said it, gwb jr. doesn't care about black people
and i say - or the poor or the working class or the elders
he cares about his cronies and the wealthy

blah blah blah?

you really should just limit yourself to those kinds of comments because in every other sense , you don't make sense.

kanye west is a racist, as is jesse hi-jackson, as is al sharpton, as is louis farakkkan, as it david duke as is thurmond, as is helms , as is robert byrd

etc ad nauseum
