[+] ballot by xxxxxxxx ACTIVE Sun Sep 04, 05 - Fri May 30, 08 There's a new ad out, claiming that the Republicans essentially let Ruth Bader Ginsberg slip through and that the Democrats should essentially return the favor with John Roberts. I can understand "returning the favor" in various aspects of work and life. However, in this case I don't. Regardless of who is appointed to the Supreme Court, and by who, the most important factor to me seems to be how the appointee interprets the Constitution. I dislike John Roberts as an appointee because of his interpretation of the Constitution. He seems to want to undermine freedom of religion, a right to privacy, and women's rights. Since the Supreme Court is an oligarchy of sorts -- no other court can overturn its rulings -- it's vital that we have a justice that respects the rights provided by the Constitution, and I don't trust John Roberts in that sense. That isn't presenting certain cases in front of him and asking how he'd rule on it -- that isn't necessary, and that's what the Republicans did to Ginsberg -- that's simply based on his track record, something that shouldn't be ignored no matter who the appointee is. I get the impression that Republicans want Democrats to ignore this in favor of an "I scratched your back, now you scratch mine" mentality. I don't believe that members of the government should take turns scratching each other's backs; rather, they should have the interests of the country in the forefront. While it was a nice gesture in theory for the Republicans to let Ginsburg through -- a gesture they shouldn't have done, for they should've questioned her deeper if they were truly concerned about the Supreme Court -- it shouldn't be necessary for the Democrats to do that in return. THE INTEREST OF THE COUNTRY AS A WHOLE SHOULD ALWAYS COME FIRST. Anyway, that's my two cents on the issue.
