DOES THE DEATH PENALTY DETER MURDER?

[+] ballot by steelhamster
created Thu Dec 11, 03

Statistics show that where a state or nation has the death penalty as its ultimate sanction, that state has the highest homicide rate. Is there an alternative or is the old axiom of 'eye for an eye' the only way?

Yes
No
No, it just ensures the killer will kill if they knew they would die anyway if caught
Yes, State Sponsored Murder is more humane
I would be the executioner
I would be afraid of later finding out the convicted person was innocent.

COMMENTS:
The Death Penalty is a joke. It is NOT going to help the murdered ones, it's not going to help anybody.

The Death Penalty doesn't deter people. It makes them more likely to commit a crime.

Or we can be like Europe and treat murderers and rapists like kings in prison.

This is in response to pipingkid and dingleberry commentaries, first of all, it appears that the both of you are supporters of the death penalty, and I noticed that pipingkid alluded to two cases that deem the death penalty unconstitutional (Furman v Georgia) and another case that upheld the death penalty (Gregg v Georgia). Lets take a look at those Justices that were sitting on the Supreme Court at the time when both decisions were made, shall we? And also, one has to be familiar with each case in there totality as to why each decision were made, when you (I am referring to the personal "you" pipingkid) read both cases? Then maybe you will get a better sense/understanding as to why both decisions were made. As long as the Death Penalty is not distributed equally on racial/gender grounds? The Death Penalty should be abolished and deemed unconstitutional. As long as the Prosecutor continue to decide to prosecute cases as death penalty cases on the premise of the racial make up of the defendant/victim (please be my guest to pull up the statistics on this inJUSTICE pipinkid)the Death Penalty should be deem uncontitutional as should selective prosecution and selectively deciding who shall live and who shall die along racial/gender lines, God is watching us all and if you think using the Bible will justify this inJUSTICE? Think again, YES, I think about the victim, YES, the act, the horrible act(s) committed by the defandant against the victim are/is/were horrific and unspeakable in nature and for those acts God will exact any/all punishment. However, punishment will (and I am certain of this) be extac accordingly to the actions of the defandant and not the race/gender of either the defandant and/or victim. You see, there is no FLAW in GOD's treatment/punishment of his children, MAN should stop being about GOD's business and be about his son's deeds towards his fellow man...AMEN and AMEN!

On the whole I can't say if the death penalty deters murder, but it certainly won't deter suicidal people. Besides, the entire point of crime is to not get caught.
