Algerians have passed a referendum to grant amnesty to many militants, although many families of the victims called for a boycott, saying they are against the idea of forgiving killers.

Question to you, is it ok to forgive killers , if it means stability and peace?

Or is it necessary to expose and punish those who have done wrong?

If a loved one of yours were killed or missing, could you be so forgiving?

no

COMMENTS:
In the long term, yes. I hope that I could learn to forgive those who harmed people that I love. Not so much for them, but for myself, because I don't want to live with hatred and revenge for the rest of my life, and sully the memories of my loved ones with those emotions. But I think it would take me a long time to get there.

This is where the rubber meets the road: Our theories of who we are rarely get tested, and it may be impossible for us to imagine what it's like to have a family member killed and try to forgive them.

Is it okay to forgive killers if it means peace? If it means no more will be killed? Perhaps. But hard stuff, Larry.

Nope. I can't forgive that pig Hussien for starting a war in which my little brother was severely injured.

don't know - hope i never have to find out. i think i might want revenge - though i would like to say otherwise.

I'm sorry, but if anyone did any harm to my dad, or brother, I would never, in any way, forgive them; it just seems a little ridiculous to me.
by xxxxxxxx on Fri Sep 30, 05 10:26pm [+]

I'm not into that whole forgiveness for murder thing. If someone ends the life of someone you LOVE, you have every right in the world to loathe them for the rest of your life. No, I would never, under ANY circumstances, forgive them.

If the goal would be to ensure peace to my country, yes, but otherwise, no.

The fact is that loved ones die anyway, whether or not you want them to. So yes, I hope that I would be able to forgive their killers.
by zorra on Sun Oct 02, 05 9:39am [+]

yes, they will die anyways someday, but to shorten someones life, I haven't forgiven yet, but I'm not so filled with hate toward the person as I was.

i might swallow my anger and not do anything to others but i'd never ever forgive them.
by weebles48 on Sun Oct 02, 05 11:42am [+]

No. We keep hearing how wonderful forgivness is, it's pounded into our heads from kindergarten on. But there are some people who just shouldn't be forgiven. If someone intentionally causes me harm and has no remorse, why should I forgive them?
by herzog on Sun Oct 02, 05 12:35pm [+]

but what if it was not intentional, as in a DWI accident?
by larrynelmira on Sun Oct 02, 05 12:43pm [+]

If it was entirely an accident, and they showed remorse, then yes, eventually.

But I doubt these militants A) accidently killed their victims or B) feel even the slightest bit of remorse for doing it.
by herzog on Sun Oct 02, 05 2:00pm [+]

No, I would get the rope and would not rest until I got some pay-back.
