ethics : PUBLIC MORALITY VERSUS PRIVATE MORALITY, WHICH SHOULD BE THE PRIORITY OF ELECTED OFFICIALS?

Private morality - concerned with legislating what the individual does: homosexuality (gay marriage, etc), sexual behavior between consenting adults, marijuana use, alcohol use, etc. Basically anything that has to do with individual behavior and choices.

Public morality - examples would include the morality of allowing homelessness, people without health care, poverty, hunger, etc.

No "both" choice. You have to choose.

government has no business attempting to regulate my private life - in fact no one does. what is ironic is that the same people to chant about "less government" are the ones that want to regulate who you sleep with, what you consume and how you think. This is a complicated question, as i don't think morality is in any way the government's concern. Why then deal with poverty, hunger and illness? The cold answer is that it is in society's best interest to have healthy, functioning citizens. Is it the government's role? Maybe not, but as a taxpayer, I would like my government to assist in building a better society. Too many issues to address here any further right now.

The government has no reason to tell consenting adults what they can do in the privacy of their own home. If it doesn't hurt anyone else it should be legal. If the only one being harmed is the person doing it that should be legal, stupid, but legal.
