[+] serious ballot by Cathexis
ACTIVE Fri Dec 02, 05 - Wed Jul 25, 07

In a Nov 30 speech at a nice, safe military base, George W Bush asserted "Our strategy in Iraq is clear ... I will settle for nothing less than *complete victory*."

Do you believe he will make this statement true?

Yes: He will achieve complete victory
No: It will be an undeniable abyssmal disaster
Yessss: He will (again) lower goals and arbitrarily declare victory
No: But he will achieve 'partial' victory
Yes, although for the insurgents

COMMENTS:
At this point, what exactly *is* "complete victory"?

Complete victory is when they bend over and kiss their ass goodby.

He's the President for christ sake. What else is he going to say to the troops? Well its probably unwinnable and your deaths will be in vain but give it your all".

CI: These troops were at a stateside base. The speech was televised. He wasn't really speaking to the troops, he was speaking to America, since the speech was widely covered.

There's morale ... and then there's delusion and/or lying.

PS: The troops were props, not a real audience.
by Cathexis on Fri Dec 02, 05 9:32am [+]

When he's talking about the Iraq war he's talking to the troops and their families regardless of where he's speaking.
by ClosetIguana on Fri Dec 02, 05 9:37am [+]

Hey I'm not for this war but let's get real here. What the Bush admin says and believes are not nessessarily the same thing.
by ClosetIguana on Fri Dec 02, 05 9:40am [+]

Sure, until the next president comes into office. The troops that were at the speech most likely had strict orders to not boo the presidents comment. I bet they had a "clap now" light lit up every 30 seconds in the studio.
by Dingleberry on Fri Dec 02, 05 9:44am [+]

The next President that comes into office won't say anything but encouragement either.
by ClosetIguana on Fri Dec 02, 05 9:57am [+]

It depends on how you define "complete victory." To me, it would mean a reasonably stable government that's not totally corrupt, a marginally functioning democracy, the infrastructure steadily improving, the oil industry coming back (to fund the rebuilding of the infrastructure) and the various ethnic groups not having a civil war, and the army getting the insurgents, the foreign fighters, and the border under control.

From that point on, it's up to them.
by True_US on Fri Dec 02, 05 10:21am [+]

I certainly hope that the Bush Administration is successful in that assertion. I don't see how failure helps us, the Democrats, the world, Europe. However you look at it success would be better than failure.

"Complete victory." Do I really need to go on?

Are we talking about Iraq or the US here?

Does anybody really believe that Georgey has anything to do with "his" decisions? It all seams so surreal the HE is actually pulling his own strings.
by robotthinker on Fri Dec 02, 05 3:39pm [+]

Voted : No: It will be an undeniable abyssmal disaster
Bush was probably trying to quote General 'unconditional surrender' Grant, but he's not even in the same leage with Grant.
Who's he trying to fool? It's not going to happen any more than it did in Vietnam.
