This goes to the whole debate of what torture is (which I posted on LO article/ view/? id=810 and 809). Unfortunately due to numerous other postings I don't think many people saw these.

Even John McCain is willing to concede that there are some extreme situations where it might be justified. However, this should not be abused. Some countries handle it so that they will permit torture (to a point and this is defined) if the situation is extreme. However, they will prosecute to the fullest extent anyone requesting or doing the torture if the request was bogus. When you are faced with substantial prison time if you are wrong, then it self-restricts the use of this option severely.

Interesting question.

I don't think anyone would deny that sometimes during wars you have to do things that in peace are unacceptable.

For instance we rationing, covert ops, bombing of civilians, crushing of dissent, etc during other wars and most people say that it was both worth it and necessary to preserve the country. Take for example wwII and the civil war, we did horrible things to win both of these, but I think most would say it was worth it, and that america was not forced to become a facist dictatorship because of it.

But as for torture specifically during this war, I don't know. If using deprivation and psychology works I think we should do it. If they don't and the next step is hanging them from piano wire and taking a blowtorch to them, I'd definately be opposed to that scenario.

Never. Engaging in or condoning uncivilized and undemocratic practices like torture make a mockery of civilization and democracy.... and ultimately destroys everything we claim to believe in as a civilized society.

Zig: was democracy destroyed when the US practiced uncivilized and undemocratic practices such as rounding up ethnic minorities into camps during the 40s?

The meaning was, if not the actual mechanism.

So was it permanently destroyed, or temporarily only to be restored at the end of the conflict?
