COMMENTS:
It seemed to display that many Australians are racist...
I think it shows that some people are racist,
To me... it showed it more to be a deeply divided society exploding after years of serious miscommunication and neglect. Shame that there's such a widespread sense of disenfranchisement there right now, on both sides of the invisible fence.

Im just suprised to hear that white people are rioting for a change. Normally its the minorities. But no, of course not is the answer to your question. Like fiddle said, it shows that SOME Australians are racist.
As an Australian I admit there’s a lot of racists out there but I think it’s the minority. Yet when the minority are shown on TV people think that’s the majority. Plus Howard’s anti terror bill (which we don’t need) didn’t help matters.

Don't forget the problem with ethnic gangs. i.e. Lebanese, Turks, Vietnamese, Greeks etc. They cause this shit too.
Les6Hithe6Wins6Again - you are probably right. It isn't linear. Violence and hatred does seem to be cyclical.

There is much more to it... "On Sunday 2005 December 11, approximately 5000 people had gathered in an ad-hoc protest to "reclaim the beach" from recently-reported incidents that had added to a history of antisocial and intimidatory behaviour by groups of non-locals, most of whom were identified in the earlier media reports as Lebanese Muslim youths from the western suburbs of Sydney." "On Sunday 11 December 2005, prior to the outbreak of violence, a crowd of people estimated at 5,000 gathered at Cronulla beach. As well as individuals of European descent, people of Pacific island descent were involved in the protest (Daily Telegraph, December 12)." "A community hall linked to a Uniting Church was burned to the ground early yesterday, carol singers were spat on and church buildings peppered with gunfire...was intended to destroy the Uniting Church adjacent, while nearby St Thomas's Anglican Church, which has a primarily Chinese congregation, had all its front windows smashed. Three of the attacks were on churches within minutes of each other. The night before, Molotov cocktails were used in an attack on an Anglican Church in Macquarie Fields in the city's far southwest." There is a ton of consolodated coverage at wikipedia under "2005 Sydney race riots".Check the reference section.
It's funny how this ballot focuses on a one sided account. There is plenty of blame to go around Socrates.
robotthinker- yes, the hatred and violence does seem to be cyclical and not linear. I am aware that there are Lebanese gangs, but to attack anyone who is Lebanese with the assumption that they are all gangsters and troublemakers is silly.
robotthinker, so that makes it okay to beat up random people on the streets? Geez, so if I want to start a race war, I just go and murder some people and make it look like black people did it. Oh wait, charles manson already tried it, and it didn't work. Although these days, there maybe just enough stupid people around so it might succeed.

"to attack anyone who is Lebanese with the assumption that they are all gangsters and troublemakers is silly." I made no such assumption or rationalization. How do you extrapolate that from my post?Attacking anybody because of what they are is not acceptable. No argument here. "robotthinker, so that makes it okay to beat up random people on the streets?" Certainly not.Again,I suggested no such thing. All I did was provide a little balance to a clearly skewed article that implies it was a one sided affair.I specifically concluded my response by noting that there was plenty of blame to go around/IE skinheads and drunken yahoos were to blame as well was not denied.
I live in australia and I can tell you that when the leaders of this country aswell as others like the USA are condoning violence slaughter and torture of innocents on mass in Iraq, Afghanistan etc all in the name of 'freedom' aswell as locking up child refugees in detention centres indefinitely well what do they expect? If the youth of this country see the leaders and authorities behaving this way then they think that its ok. The media and the neo conservative politicians have whipped up an unwarranted fear, paranoia and hysteria in the community about terrorism, muslims etc. It has been bubbling away beneath the surface unchecked for years and on the week of the riots it exploded. There are a lot of different ethnic minority groups here who feel angry and disenfranchised from the wider community and so their anger tends to manifest as anti social behaviour ie gang rapes, random bashings, anti australian racism, verbal abuse of woman etc. The riots were in response to that. I grew up here in a beachside suburb. When I was a kid it was very very white here. Australia has changed very dramatically in a very short space of time. Suddenly we are a very multicultural society and many people feel like they dont belong anywhere in their own country. We are learning to adjust. I cannot go to the suburb where I grew up because I find it really sad that it is now a mecca for backpackers and tourists, most of whom have no respect for the environment or the locals. This is not a race issue, I think its a behavioural issue. When in Rome do as the Romans do. When you go to another country you dont trash the place. The politicians are sickening hypocrites waving their fingers at the rioters. The rioters were foolish to act this way however because now they have given the thuggish reactionary politicians and authorities an excuse to erode even more civil liberties in the form of random searches of mobile phones on unsuspecting members of the public, power to search and confiscate cars without a warrant, locking down of entire suburbs which is having a devastating affect on the businesses there, more dog squads which intimidate people etc etc. All this they tell us is to protect our 'freedom' in our 'democratic society'. Funny isnt it that the more they say they are protecting our freedom , the more they are taking it away. I am more scared of corrupt police abusing their powers than a few rioters. The 'coalition of liars' might think they are winning the pre-emptive war with their powerful weapons of precision, a war which they created with their bad policies many moons ago ,however, in day to day life amongst ordinary civilians, the fear paranoia and hysteria that is evident is a sure sign that the terrorists are winning on a completely different level.
Lebanese gangs have been targetting white people in Sydney on the basis of race for years. The police didn't do anything about it. But when Australians get together and turn the tables everyone cries fowl. These riots were the result of angry people. People angry because the police couldn't arrest minorites for committing crimes because the cops would be slandered 'racist'. Multiculturalism is destroying western society people. Our unique culture made the west what it is. We shouldn't have to adapt our culture to suit minorites. They come here, they should have to adapt to suit us.
i h8 greek-australians.
