DO YOU HOLD YOUR GOD TO ANY ETHICAL STANDARDS AT ALL?

I think that it’s sad that people are so self-righteous that they kill each other for doing things less horrible than God has done to perfectly innocent human beings. For instance God (according to the bible) has drowned far more babies than Susan Smith ever dreamed of yet she is in prison and he is the ethical leader of most of the human population. Humans have killed far less bloodthirsty tyrants in the past for committing much tamer acts of cruelty than the Judeo-Christian Islamic God, but rather than denounce him people embrace him selfishly hoping to gain a reward that no one can prove exists. If someone killed my parents and asked me to worship them for a reward I can only believe exists through an outrageous leap of faith I would hold nothing but contempt for that person. What do you think? Do you hold your God to any ethical standards at all?

Yes
No

Honestly, NO; why? Because I believe it would be fruitless. The verb "hold" as used in your question would indicate control. It is that verb that assures that my answer must be in the negative. How could someone (like myself)--who purports to believe in an all powerful, all knowing BEING--ever presume to exercise ANY control over said BEING?
Were I to take your position...i.e. If I DIDN'T believe in God...(a position which you have made noteworthy efforts defending)...I wouldn't waste my time on mindless twits like myself trying to convince them (us) otherwise, (that is the purpose of this ballot, isn't it?) unless, of course, I thought I was a "god" of sorts (or at least smarter than everyone else) and it was incumbent upon me to do so.
That having been said, I am reasonably certain that the topic of morality and ethics (as with all other topics) originated FROM God. It's rather difficult to articulate, RG; but, I'll try if you think we will actually have a TWO WAY conversation. The TRUTH is not a thing which I believe anyone should be shy of...and there are lots of things that, quite honestly, I am not sure about. I wonder, is there anything that YOU are not sure about?

Contragrian Why do you say this: "I am reasonably certain that the topic of morality and ethics (as with all other topics) originated FROM God."? Or better said, what makes you think this way?
by johann_moritz on Thu Dec 22, 05 6:41am [+]

simple Johan, because I believe in a God. If God is all Powerful, then Everything originated from God.

If it turns out that there is a God, I don't think that he's evil.
But the worst that you can say about him is that basically he's an underachiever.

I don't have a god to hold to any standards.
I wouldn't be that judgemental..
by aplmac on Thu Dec 22, 05 8:17am [+]

Of course. As is usual from your ballots, you fail to understand what is history, allegory and guidelines for life from any religious faith.

Robin, I really like some of your other ballots, but in ballots like these you run the risk of sounding like a recruitment officer for ol' Satan himself. rolleyes
