WHY IS A PAINTING OF A CAN OF CAMPBELL'S SOUP CONSIDERED ART?

Andy Warhol once painted a picture of a can of Campbell's soup, and it's an extremely famous painting. I can understand how all sorts of things are considered art -- I'm fairly open-minded to it and don't consider myself to be any sort of expert when it comes to art -- but flat-out painting a soup label (which someone else designed) doesn't seem to fit that category to me. To me, that seems like little more than copycat work. I just don't see it. How is it art -- why is it considered art?

Because it was painted and not just a photograph of a can of soup.
You have to cross your eyes just slightly...
Because an artist did it
Free advertising of course lol:)
Because some people really like tomato soup - a lot!

COMMENTS:
Because it is an art form in the style of a still life, which portrays the modern consumerist, mass-produced, and capitalist context. Original idea at the time, it would seem.

But personally, I prefer Renaissance or perhaps impressionism.

"copycat work"

- In a still life you are supposed to just copy the inanimate objects that you see. Traditionally it was bowls of fruit, glasses of wine, candles and such. This was a breakthrough as it portrayed modernity.
