WHO CAN BEST MAKE THE DETERMINATION OF WHETHER A COMMENT/JOKE IS BIGOTED? THE PERSON MAKING THE COMMENT, THE PERSON/PEOPLE TO WHOM IT IS DIRECTED, OR AN OUTSIDE OBSERVER?

I am asking this for a few reasons:

1. The labels racist/bigoted/anti-Semitic are used quite frequently. Often the person accusing another of racism/bigotry/anti-Semitism is not the person/people to whom the comment or joke is directed. In a sense, they make the judgment themselves without asking the person/people to whom it is directed.
2. Often, a person will say their comment/joke was not racist/bigoted/anti-Semitic. They will make this determination without asking the person/people affected what they think. Often, they dismiss what the person says. Examples: “The term “racist” is used too much”, “have a sense of humor”, etc.
3. Often, the affected group may have a fairly defined standard of what type of terms are OK. Some of the time, what it is OK within the affected group is not OK for those outside the group to use.

Who can best make the determination?

Think carefully before you answer.

The person/people it is directed at
The person making the comment
Outside observer
Other (specify)

I dont hink its the 'offended' who can judge whether something is racist etc.

People get irrationally offended by all sorts of comments. It doesn't necessarily mean the comments are imoral. Often it is oversensitivity that causes the offence.

Racism and bigotry only occurs when the person speaking actually means to offend a person, disciminate or patronise against them.

For example - It is fine for me to make jokes about black or white people, which are shocking, stereotypical and tastelesss. So long as I am not seriously believing the things I am saying. For example - being satirical, sarcastic or taking the piss out of biggots.

Unfortunatly many people jump to certain negative conclusions as soon as certain buzzwords are used in a comic mannor... e.g Black, Gay, Dissabled.

People are SO touchy nowadays. You can't say the least little thing that might offend the bastard. People Used to say, 'Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!" What happened? People (some people) are ultra sensitive, and they bristle at the most minor comment or offensive word. Must we kiss everybody's ash to avoid being attacked or sued or otherwise browbeaten? Freedom of Speech was once such a wonderful thing! You dirty rats!
