WHY IS IT THAT THE COPS SHOW UP MOST WHEN YOU NEED THEM LEAST AND VICE-VERSA?

Here's the situation that just happened to me in the past hour-and-a-half:

It's Spring Break! Home to Council Bluffs I go! So I packed up some laundry and a birthday present for my mom, amongst a few other little things, and started the standard westward trek from Iowa City down I-80 toward my birth home. About 15-20 miles into my journey, my car's temperature gauge was reading exceedingly high.

I was worried about this happening -- a few months ago my dad noticed a bit of a problem with this. He didn't know if there was a leak in my coolant or if my water pump was shot. I had filled up my car with coolant before heading off, so I'm assuming it's the latter.

Anyway, I stopped at a gas station to cool my car down and also got a snack. Some 10 minutes later, I got back into my car and headed back to Iowa City.

Ten miles further, my car overheated to the point that the needle was buried at the top of the gauge and the Check Engine light came on, so I had to pull over on the interstate, pop the hood, and wait for it to cool down. In the meantime, I wondered if a cop would pass by.

See, cops patrol the interstate all the time for various reasons. This sounds obvious, but it was also my rationale. I figured that a cop would eventually pass by, see me, pull over, and see what was wrong. At that point, I could explain to him (or her, but most likely him) that my car's having temperature problems and that I'm just trying to make it back, and ask for advice as to what to do to ensure that my car doesn't blow up or whatever.

I waited for ten minutes. No cops passed by. By this time, the smoke dissipated and the car quit making a hissing sound, so I decided to see how much further I could press it.

Five miles later, once again, it overheated to the point that the needle was buried at the top of the gauge and the Check Engine light was on. Once again, I pulled over, popped the hood, and waited for around ten minutes alongside the interstate. Several cars passed me. No cops.

The car had cooled down enough, and I had roughly another five miles to go, so I got back into the car and headed off. I managed to make it off the interstate, but the needle was buried once again, so I decided to relieve it at a park about half a mile from my apartment. The Check Engine light hadn't come on, and I could have pressed it, but I wanted to play it somewhat conservatively.

This time I didn't even look for cops. I was at a park, and my track record so far seemed to indicate that no cop would show up. I was right. No worries, though, for I was near home. I walked around the park a bit and let the engine cool down.

Satisfied that it had cooled down enough, I drove off toward my apartment. Instantly the gauge read really hot. I was pushing it, trying to beat the clock of inevitability that was my engine.

What happened? A cop caught me speeding and pulled me over. Yeah. Now here's a cop, two streets away from my apartment.

I turned off my engine yet again as he stopped behind me. He walked up to my car, and I explained my situation to him, and he told me that I was going 41 mph in a 25-mph zone. He took my license, ran it through his system, and let me off with a warning. On the plus side, it was the first time I've ever been pulled over for speeding and been let off with a warning!

i asked the cop if he could tail me back up to near my apartment, just in case. He obliged, which was nice of him. Rarely do you meet a nice cop in Iowa City.

Anyway, why is it that a cop seems to be most likely to show up when you need him least, and vice-versa? This isn't a knock on the police -- it just seems to be timing more than anything.

Bad timing.
They have a knack for that.
