As far as the migration of Protestant Scots into Ulster is concerned, it happened centuries ago - nobody alive today is to blame for it, and the people that live there are all born & bred Ulstermen. That's why the matter has to be handled delicately. Both sides agreed to peace due to the UK's committments in Europe and the USA's drained resources. The War of 1812 almost broke the USA's back and the UK wasn't even using a substantial amount of force in the war. In the War of Independence the 13 were helped by France, Spain and the Netherlands and the UK by a couple of thousand Hessians. By 1778 the 13 colonies were on the ropes, even AFTER Saratoga and virtually. Only french money direct from Louis XVI saved the war effort there.
