In fact, that argument first originated in 1836 when the first bill was proposed in Congress to do away with it. $.005 would be worth exactly $0.10 in 2005. The penny has been under assault since the late 1960s as being in a similar position as the half cent in the 1850s. Taking all of that into consideration, should we not only eliminate the penny, but the nickel and dime as well? Have we become a bunch of penny pinchers? Yes, do away with the penny, nickel, & dime. No, do away with the penny & nickel only. No, do away with the penny only. No, we need to keep producing all of them. No, we should reinstate the half cent as a circulating denomination.
