COMMENTS:
Astrology does have at least one common link with psychology. The need for meaning. Psychologically, all humans have a strong desire to find meaning in their lives. In fact, our brains constantly problem-solve, always looking for the simplest explanation. Science just doesn't quite do it for most people, because science is complicated, and the brain does not like complicated answers. That is why religion and other belief systems, like astrology will never die out. People need something to cling to - to make their lives bearable. And who can blame them?
But hey Im a Sagitarrian, so I would say that
NO, just a con game like it has always been. Astrology hasn't been used to help people get well.
^Maybe the point wasn't to help people the same way a psychiatrist does, just tell them what was going to happen and to prepare accordingly.
I believe that astrology probably utilized many nascent psychology principles, but I'd hesitate to equate them. I suspect astrology springs from a deep-seated psychological need for direction, purpose, and causality.
Science is complicated because it only focuses on the physical plane and all it's physical complexities. Astrology somewhat have to do with physical things - the planets. Ofcourse people don't depend on astrology to solve every problem, like "how do I get this jar open?". Astrology is a BASIC kind of pattern in us that explains who has a certain type of personality. All it is, is a personality inventory, but you don't have to take a quiz to find out who you are. Similar to "Are you an introvert or an extrovert?". Not everything can be explained by the physical. Why are we here? Why is there matter? Why do a bunch of rocks float around in space? Just because you haven't seen it with your own eyes doesn't mean it isn't true. There are things and patterns behind all the physical stuff. The physical world is a representation of the spiritual/mystical world.
Astrology is not the same as psychology, as texsue said. Psychology deals with the substance of people's issues. "Oh, this person was abused, that's why their this way". Psychology deals with specifid situations. "I'm depressed lately". Astrology doesn't deal with specifics. Astrology and zodiac signs, etc. are a basic outline of your personality. It's who you are as a person. "This is how virgos generally react when confronted by this". Here's a recap: Psychology: -"I'm depressed lately." -"Why?" -"Because nobody likes me / life sucks." -"You have clinical depression. It's a disorder, you need pills./It's because you're mother died recently." Astrology: -"I'm a so-and-so" -"The strength of so-and-so sign is a strong sense of justice. A weakness is their indecisiveness. -"So-and-so sign are happiest when bla bla bla, and they get depressd when bla bla bla." See, the second one is not specific, it just explains your personality.
