Yes I know many people who are fiscal conservatives and social liberals. They support Bush's foreign policy but despies his domestic foolishness.
Yes, that's where Libertarians stand, I think.
Narrow minds are often unable to see beyond narrow fields.
You are describing someone who is probably in the Labour Party if you were British. They used to be a socialist party but are more of a centre left party now. The things you mention could also apply to me, I too think government should be community led and not centralised. I also believe in equlity and reigning in the gap between rich and poor. I wouldnt call myself a conservative however.
Yes it's possible
I wouldnt call myself a conservative however. by Steelhamster on Apr 22, 2006 5:12pm Perhaps I'm not technically a conservative politically. I've just always considered myself as such because my personal habits are extremely traditional.
Why not? No reason to simply shut yourself in a box

If your nation has a tradition of liberalism.
I consider myself a fiscal conservative and a social laissez faire type, but the rationale's the same: the individual's rights should, whenever possible, trump those of the state or any idea of collectivism. So, frankly, it's none of the government's business if you're gay or what your religion is, and your privacy rights should be respected. However, where I run counter to the far left is that I feel the same about businessmen and accumulated wealth. The individual should also have as much power against the state in that regard also. The state is an arbiter, not a nanny to redistribute money or try to meddle in the "fairness" of capitalism.
"I wouldnt call myself a conservative however." Perhaps a "conservative communist" would do?
Sure ... IMO, 'labels' tend to fluctuate with how the ambient political environment moves. If a government drifts too far Left ... we end up with more 'conservatives,' even if they have many 'liberal' attitudes. If a government moves too far right ... more liberals, even if they have some conservative views. Of course, it also depends on how successful the political party has been in demonizing the opposition.
Politics and social issues go hand in hand. This is why I don't think Christianity and conservatism are meant to be combined like they've been.
