IS IT IRONIC THAT BUDDHA, A MAN THAT PREACHED A PHILOSOPHY OF MODERATION, WAS SO OVERWEIGHT?
He ate too much fast food.
I don't know why some Chinese sects wanted to change what he looked like.
Although overall, what he looked like is irrelevant to Buddhism.
you mean like how keanu reeves portrayed him in little buddha?
buddha never said "no msg!" hence, he may have been a portly man for all we know. did he order egg roll with his take-out? see, you can't answer that, can you?
mysticalknight- Gautama was not fat.
No, you're right. He was big boned :-D
lets settle this: what was the big b's waist size? if it was above 36, he was fat. if it was 34, he was average. if he wore 32 or lower, on the thin size. but, as i suspect, if he shoped in a "big man / tall man" store, he may have been a rolly-polly porker.
Kev24- I do know that he starved himself for a long time when he was exploring other religions in India at the time. He then abandoned that and created his own philosophy which was against both indulgence and ideas of self-starvation. Hence, 'the middle-path' or moderation.
^ ahh, so he was a yo-yo dieter like oprah?
^ LOL. Well yeah he started as a wealthy Prince, than switched to self-starvation, and then switched to his own philosophy.
Well while he rejected self-starvation (which was common of other religions of his time) he also rejected any ideas of passion over food. One should not live to eat but eat to live. Eat what is necessary to live and avoid physical pain and that is all. Anymore is indulgence. And being overly passionate about a flavour will cause emotional trauma when separated from it.
He was a fat-fuck! Why do you think he was seeking "en-LITEN-ment"??? :OP
It is quite appropriate that Buddha was "fat." His way was to turn away from the world of sense, desire and suffering. Because such vanities as "skinny" or "fat" are sense-driven and transient, I can't imagine Buddha giving it a thought.
Just like all those pics that say that Jesus was a White man. We all know He wasn't even human.
There isn't just one "Buddha" Socrates there are many and that is why some Buddhas are fat and others thin.Hell there are even female Buddhas or atleast Boddhisattvas.
Buddha did not teach moderation. You are confusing him with Joseph Smith. Buddha taught detachment from the sensory world as a way to end suffering. Revisionist! lol
