No, just another way to rationalize existence of some pet vices.
"These people are as much an indian as I am African American." Down here we had Speaking Rock Casino (now shut down). This was supposedly run by the Tigua Indians. Tigua Indians? There aren’t no more “real” Tiguas. All that’s left is a bunch of Chicanos who can’t grow beards calling themselves Tiguas. For a good laugh... FROM NPR:The Tigua Indians have fallen on hard times, and they lay part of the blame on Jack Abramoff. The tribe paid Abramoff and Michael Scanlon $4.2 million to lobby Congress for permission to reopen their casino. The business partners took the tribe's money and laughed behind their backs.
Ok, but what about all the people that willfully go and "give" there money away? Regardless it is a catch 22 situation, you can't balme the tribe without blaming those who go to casinos also... I work for a well estbalished native american tribe, they do have a casino, but they also provide a significant amount of jobs here in a county that has the highest unemployement rate in Oregon. They contribute an "enormous" amount of money into various community programs... so as they are "getting rich" as you put it, I see more jobs opening up in a desolate southern Oregon town, and a lot of that money in fact going back to the community. This is just my personal experience, with this tribe though. I understand that everyone has a different viewpoint...
Here's an idea- give the First their stolen lands back!
I don't know if it's a good way to compensate Native Americans, but I've definitely done my part in paying reparations at their casinos.
first of all, you should know how these indian casinos operate. in most states, state controlled gambling sites (las vegas for example) have tight controls on how much the machine should pay out in percentage of $$ taken in, etc. In tribal casinos, no such restriction exists. If they like, they can set their machine to return $10 per $100 taken in, while Vegas casinos are limited to $80/$100. they can steal you blind, and you won't even know it. Some might call it fair play, but you should know before you step inside a tribal casino.

First of all, your premise is BS. You don't know who these people are running the casinos. They ARE Native Americans AND it is THEIR SOVEREIGN land. Whether you like it or not is irrelevant. Get it? It isn't your country, it is a separate nation. It also gets a lot of people off of public assistance. It isn't a government hand-out or way "to compensate the Native Americans". It is a BUSINESS that Native Americans have to decided to start and run on their SOVEREIGN territory. I am 1/2 Native American, not 1/64 like the posers. Yes, I am of mixed up race, but that is irrelevant. Considering your general open-mindedness regarding race, this is a rather poor ballot.

Two of my good friends are Coushatta tribe members and them and their family bennefit greatly from their tribe's casino, as do all the other members. Because of the profits from them, their tribe can take care of it's self and not have to ask for government handouts. In areas where jobs are scarce for them, a home and a quarterly income with free medical (all at the expense of their tribe) comes in very handy. And I dont know about other tribes, but most of the ones around my area require you to be 1/4th American Indian. And it's not just anyone who claims to be, you have to go through the propper channels and documentation to prove your ancestory.
Some tribes are a lot more strict than requiring 1/64th indian blood. The one nearest where I live requires 1/4 and to receive full benefits and all that good stuff it's 3/5. They have two casinos and a LOT of oil (I did a project down there just two weeks ago). Besides: Would you rather have the government run the casinos in the form of their state lotteries? Or worse, billionaires like in Vegas. That would be fantastic...
Here's an idea- give the First their stolen lands back! by Truthseeker013 on Apr 24, 2006 12:35pm I hope Europe, Africa, and Asia will take us back. But hey, I'm 1/32 Cherokee, so can I stay? Just wondering.
