IS THIS TRUE PATRIOTISM?

[+] serious ballot by cranky
ACTIVE Wed Apr 26, 06 - Mon Jan 19, 09

Can you consider yourself patriotic if all you do is a recognize a threat to the nation (WMDs in Iraq, or Nukes in Iran, let's say) and then demand other people provide soldiers, services, and other people pay taxes, to fight the ensuing wars? Joining the National Guard, fine I have no doubt that is patriotism.

But can you really consider it patriotism when you offer nothing yourself except supporting wars using other people to do things that you deem appropriate?

Yes, sending other people to war is compassionate
No, that is not true patriotism
Compasionate Fascism

cranky, when it comes to patriotism, there are two different definitions. The one that the have-nots abide by, and the one that's enforced.
by Truthseeker013 on Wed Apr 26, 06 11:42am [+]

Choice one should read: "Yes, sending other people to war is patriotic."
by cranky on Wed Apr 26, 06 11:43am [+]

No, it's chickenhawkery of the first order.

It's the sort of attitude that's espoused by mouth heroes.

For all their jingoism and sabre-rattling bluster, they're nothing more than timid little mice, terrified that they'll be called upon to bell the cat that they fear and hate so much.
by DingleDUNG on Wed Apr 26, 06 12:59pm [+]

I hate to say this Cranky, but you make a good point, IC_shock
by lil_ape on Wed Apr 26, 06 1:49pm [+]

So, if you don't volunteer to go to war you cannot be a patriot? You are automatically a chickenhawk? Don't we have this debate every day?
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Wed Apr 26, 06 3:13pm [+]

^Re read the ballot, then check ballot 93161. Then comment.
by lil_ape on Wed Apr 26, 06 3:43pm [+]

Shouldn't you be staying up all day and night plotting a flawless plan to take the president hostage and use him to end the war in iraq?

Can you really consider yourself against the war when you do nothing about it?

by Narcissus on Wed Apr 26, 06 4:47pm [+]

yah^ case more guns and fightin is the way to stop guns and fightin,
the end of this life'll be "pre-emptive", just wait n'see ;)
by Jyl on Wed Apr 26, 06 6:07pm [+]

I read both ballots. This is just another example of cranky calling people chicken hawks.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Wed Apr 26, 06 7:16pm [+]

Supporting a cause that you feel is just and good for your country, whether by being an active participant or just voicing your views and support to others, would qualify as being patriotic.

A person who voices an anti-war opinion with the intent on making people aware for the good of his country can be just as patriotic as someone who voices a pro-war stance for the same reason.
by Grumpy_Person on Wed Apr 26, 06 11:32pm [+]

that isnt patriotisim at all. Patriotisim is standing up against the actions of those who have hijacked the american government and are launching all these ilegal invasions.
by seon on Thu Apr 27, 06 1:55am [+]

well we don't all join the police force do we? nor the fire department, nor the department of sanitation. yet, we still expect them to do the jobs that taxes fund that they personally chose to do. right?
by Kev24 on Thu Apr 27, 06 10:35am [+]

Police and fire protection and sanitation aren't optional, are parts of a normal, civil society, and don't involve the killing of tens of thousands of people and the destruction of entire nations. That's a big difference.

And there's nothing inherently patriotic about city services, but there is about serving your country, especially if you are one of those howling for blood.
by cranky on Thu Apr 27, 06 6:11pm [+]

So what are you doing cranky to stop the war in iraq?

or are you the armchair hero of the iraqis?
