I'd be a bit hesitent to go those routes, only because I fear the punitive. miserly, and/or corrupt results. (1 & 2: Let them eat a bare ration of gruel, which is enough to keep them from starvation.) (3: The Jif company made major contributions to the GOP this year; coincidentally, the staple for poor people's diets will be ... Peanut Butter!)
I believe that if you want people to behave like responsible, mature adults, you have to treat them like responsible, mature adults.
I will never support the current forms of welfare. During the Great Depression, my grandfather's parents could not afford to feed and clothe him, so he was sent to work on a government funded labor camp. If these people are so desperate for assistance, why don't we do the same thing? Set up camps to clean highways/public areas, assist in disaster areas, and do the jobs of illegal immigrants. Kill two birds with one stone. They say americans will not do the jobs of the illegal immigrants. I say put the welfare families to work as indentured servants oin work camps. They should have to earn the money they are given by the taxpayers. Having more kids to make more money isn't helping stop the cycle at all. Maybe if they would have to work for it, it would.

Giving people money just doesn't work a lot of times. Ever seen someone on welfare buying cigarettes, drugs, candy, etc.? As far as what to feed them, provisions could be made in the laws to require a well balanced, plentiful meals. If people had no other choice than to feed their kids healthy food, it'd take care of two problems. There are numerous studies that show a healthy diet in infancy and early childhood increases a person's IQ by considerable amounts. If they are more intelligent, they're more likely to be successful. I just don't trust people to feed their kids fruit juice and good food rather than soda pop and candy. Look at how many people don't that CAN afford the food!

Again, it makes sense, which is why it'll never fly.- Truthseeker013, fourteenth cousin six times removed to Murphy, famed optimist.
I would rather support another welfare reform, based on self sufficiency. You make it seem as if these ppl want to stay on welfare. Well, for your information a person can only receive welfare for 5 years of their entire lives, regardless of any situation. In any case, the money that is doled out state to state is not enough to even pay 1/3 of rent. It is a portion that is WAY below minimum wage (it varies state to state). The way the welfare vacuum is set up is fucked. They should be paying for daycare for one of those years while a person is on welfare, so that the recipient can get a certificate degree at a local community college to be able to enter the workforce and have a fighting chance. I am sorry but I have worked at a potato warehouse in Co to make minimum wage...telling you right now, you wouldn't last a week darlin ;) Education is the way to go...self sufficiency all the way.
Most people have a thoroughly exaggerated idea of what public assistance provides. A person may get as little as 500 a month to live on from which food, housing and other expenses must be paid. A woman on welfare may get 50-70 dollars for each child. Hardly enough to get rich on. People believe all the garbage propaganda about welfare. They don't know the facts. I made a bunch of quizzes on this about a year ago. I can link them if you like. The thing about food.... are you going to have the food police or someone to determine what someone gets? What if you are diabetic or have a wheat allergy? What if you need kosher food? It is easier and better for the individual to make the decisions themselves. It gives them responsibility rather than MORE dependence that they would get by standing in the food line.
