[+] serious ballot by cranky ACTIVE Mon May 08, 06 - Sat Jan 31, 09 Kansas Law Sets Legal Age For Marriage by UPI Wire May 6, 2006 TOPEKA, Kan. - May 5, 2006 (UPI) -- A bill setting 15 as the minimum legal age for marriage has received final legislative approval in Kansas. Kansas is the only state with no age requirement. Gov. Kathleen Sibelius is expected to sign the bill, the Wichita Eagle reported. Under the bill, parental consent would be required for 16- and 17-year-olds to marry. A judge's consent would also be needed for 15-year-old brides or grooms. The law was inspired by the marriage in Kansas of a 22-year-old man and a 14-year-old pregnant girl from Nebraska. The couple remain legally married, although the husband is serving a prison term in Nebraska for statutory rape. The only objection to the 15-year-old minimum came from Sen. Kay O'Connor, a Republican, who argued that pregnant teens might decide to have abortions if they were barred from marrying their sexual partners.
