DO YOU AGREE WITH THE RIGHTWING LIBERTARIAN CATO INSTITUTE'S ASSESSMENT OF GEORGE W. BUSH?

I'm no libertarian (ask any of my rightwing stalkers/persecutors), but I found the Cato Institute's evaluation of Bush's effect on the U.S Constitution interesting:

(The) Bush constitutional record...is over-whelmingly, one of contempt for constitutional limits. In its official papers and public actions, the Bush administration has endorsed a vision of federal power that is astonishingly
broad, a vision that includes

• a federal government empowered to regulate core political speech—and restrict it greatly when it counts the most: in the days before a federal election;

• a president who can launch wars at will, and who cannot be restrained from
ordering the commission of war crimes,
should he choose to do so;

• a president who can lock up American
citizens at will and forever—without any meaningful oversight by the judiciary; and

• a federal government with the power to supervise all areas of American life, from education to marriage and through the end of life.

It is a vision, in short, unimagined by our Constitution’s Framers.

On the campaign trail in 2000, then-governor Bush typically ended his stump speech with a dramatic flourish: he pantomimed the oath of office. But the oath is more than a political
gimmick; for the founding generation it was a solemn pledge, designed to bind the officeholder to the country and the Constitution he serves. Throughout his tenure, President Bush
has repeatedly dishonored that pledge. And because of that, he has weakened the constitutional order on which the American way of life depends. (Power Surge: the Constitutional Record of George W. Bush, Cato Institute)

Do you agree with the Cato Institute's assessment?

Yes, Bush has had a serious, negative impact on the U.S. Constitution
No, Bush can do anything he wants; he's the president
Bush has misinterpreted the Constitution

COMMENTS:
The Constitution has survived many crises, and I think it will survive George Bush. He does seem to think that he is above the law, and many of his actions, were it not for the smokescreen of 9-11 would have gotten him impeached by now.

Each day brings new outrages from this administration. I simply cannot imagine anyone this stupid, but apparently my imagination isn't dark enought.

The difference here, IMO, is that the Cato Institute is based on a conservative/ libertarian ideology ... not just on unquestioning partisanship. Thus, when party deviates from true ideology, they stay true to their principles.

I may disaagree with many of their principles, but not this one. And I do acknowledge their consistency to principle -- a refreshing event, looking over the supposedly Conservative field.

I recall that someone in D.C. once said that the Constitution was "just a g*ddam piece of paper"...

Yes, but CATO isn't right wing, it's just right. It is one of the few liberal institutions left in American politics.
