Polygamous sect leader makes FBI's most wanted

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) -- Polygamist church leader Warren Jeffs has been placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in hopes that the additional exposure and reward money will lead to his arrest.

Jeffs, 50, is accused of arranging marriages between underage girls and older men.

He is wanted in Arizona on criminal charges of sexual conduct with a minor. He also was charged in Utah with rape as an accomplice.

"We are doing everything we can to track him down," Fuhrman, special agent in charge of the FBI's Salt Lake City field office, said Saturday.

Jeffs is the leader of the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, based in the neighboring communities of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona.

The sect split from mainstream Mormonism after the broader church renounced polygamy in 1890. The mainstream Latter Day Saints church excommunicates members found to be practicing polygamy.

Jeffs has not been seen by anyone outside of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints community for nearly two years. He also faces a charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

By putting him on the Top 10 list, the FBI's reward increases from $50,000 to $100,000. The list is also distributed worldwide.

The FBI's announcement coincided with Jeffs' case appearing on the television program "America's Most Wanted."

I'm not defending what this jackass has allegedly done. But with terrorists, drug cartel kingpins, and former Enron executives all on the loose, does this guy really deserve a place on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list?

Of course he does.

Read that list of crimes back to yourself - the guy is paedophile supplying other paedophiles with children. The quicker he is locked away the better for everyone.

Or shall we wait until he abuses someone in your family?

If you've seen footage of this guy, he is very clearly a cult leader -- typical God complex. On a television segment, the children of his followers understood him to be the President.
We've seen what can happen when one person has this kind of sway over people; he does belong on the list, given the number of people he is a threat to.

rubbish! - the world is full of equal assholes.
Why wasn't JIM JONES also on their little list?

Probably not. Hard to know, with the ambiguity and rhetoric. An 'underage girl' may be 17 ... but everyone assumes she's 5.

With the Puritanical anti-sex mindset of the US, I doubt he is deserving of being in any Top 10 list, though.

Putting Warren Jeffs on the Top 10 is absurd. There are, as you note, many, many more qualified candidates. For example, the FBI estimates that there are over 2000 serial killers on the loose, many of whom are known. These crazy, violent people do not appear on the list. Crazy stuff.

Here's why I believe Jeffs was put on the Top 10: A large number of FBI agents are BYU and Boston College graduates. The BYU agents are ordinary Mormons -- and deplore the negative publicity they receive when people generalize from this splinter group of polygamists to all Mormons. These LDS agents have caused this posting of Jeffs to the most wanted list. Even if they don't catch him, it helps to separate polygamists from mainstream Mormons.

Another possible reason: They want to kill him because he is such an embarrasment to the Mormon Church.

To justify killing someone, the FBI will first demonize them, claim they are dangerous and run with other dangereous fok. This assignment of evil legitimizes, in the public mind, the killing.

Remember Waco: David Koresh jogged daily outside the compound and could have been arrested there without a fight. The ATF and FBI wanted to seize the group's guns and kill Koresh, so they waited until he was back in the compound to go after him. IMO, something similar is brewing with Jeffs.

As much as I'd like this piece of crap out of circulation, I think that there are more important people who need to be on that list.

He is a sicko who is a headpin of victimizing our young children. Our children deserve protection. What could possibly be more important than that??

^One thing about Jeffs really troubles me: He is just outright ugly. How in the heck does he get all these women to do his bidding? I need to read his book.
