WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT AMERICA?

[+] ballot by MAMASITA
created Wed May 10, 06

I am a student and half of our group are passing their exams a month earlier just to be able to go to America for the summer. What I don't understand - their parents are RICH! They could go Paris or Amsterdam to have some fun and instead of this they will spend their holiday in New York working in hotels and Luna Parks. What's so special about America?

America is the greatest country in the world!
America sucks, but students want to earn some extra money
Come to New York to see what its alll about.
Stay where you are/ Our country is full allready
Perhaps they actually believe all the hype about the place?
that you dont live here
wide open spaces
friendliest people
relatively cheap gas prices

Perhaps they're impressed by Hollywood hype, MTV-style consumer excess and massive over-exposure of the US on European TV?

Whatever the reason, they're stupid bastards.
by DingleDUNG on Wed May 10, 06 10:02am [+]

why do you think its stupid to travel? is USA such a bad country? have ever visited different countries?
by MAMASITA on Wed May 10, 06 10:07am [+]

I don't think it's stupid to travel, quite the opposite.

And yes, I've travelled a lot. I'd much sooner spend time in Europe than the US, I didn't particularly enjoy America when I was there - I found it to be quite homogeneous & thoroughly undeserving of the shameless self-promotion churned out by e.g. Hollywood, but I concede that it's all a matter of personal taste.

I guess some people hate America no matter what. I'm sure SOME people did not travel that extensively, otherwise SOME people would know that like ALL country's, there are good points and bad points!!

but its americans, who make all this films,
dont they?

So would I, but I guess, America is a good school of survivng. and my friends think, that if they have spend so much time in this stressed and dangerous, but without any doubt very interesting country, it means, that they have grown up.

IC_mrusa It's the greatest country in the world!

it's going to be again, as long as we fire the CEO and put somebody with a half a brain in the office.IC_cheer

personally I dont hate America. How can I hate a country where I have never been? But still...George Bush is a dungbrain...even you should understand this. but all politicians are dirty, including our president

Where on earth in the U.S. did you go? Los Angeles? Downtown Manhattan? I love how you snide Euro weenies visit one or two large coastal cities and suddenly are experts on the United States. Might I suggest next time that you go just a bit off the beaten track? Try some of the plantation Old South or go for a hike in the Rockies--preferably in grizzly bear territory during mating season.

Personally, I find Western Europeans insufferable and unjustly self righteous about everything. I vastly prefer what I've seen of Eastern Europe to the West and prefer Asia over Europe in general.

That would be the first Libertarian President, yes? ...Or are you just suggesting less Repugnican neocon insanity & more Night of the Living New Deal from the Democraps?
by Felix on Wed May 10, 06 10:45am [+]

Well, look at it this way: the U.S. will be very cheap travel deal once the dollar implodes within the next few years. If we see at least the 25% decline predicted, we will probably be awash in Western Euro-weenies.

by MAMASITA on Wed May 10, 06 12:21pm [+]

Ah yes Felix, I'll take Asia over Europe any day of the week. I also agree with you over eastern vs western europe.
by mindy on Wed May 10, 06 1:07pm [+]

There's a song from the Dawn of Civilization that I'm really fond of, and it expresses the sentiments that I love about my country.

"There was atime when strangers were welcome here

"Music woould play

"They'd tell me the days were sweet

"And clear..."

Unless you like clouds with your tourism, I'd stay home.

there's not enough room on this ballot to list all the reasons.

You answered a portion of your question with your statement. "Working in America"! We are one of the few countries in the world where you can actually get a job to support your travels... ie tips!
I agree with Felix... It still amazes me when I travel abroad and someone says "I've been to America" where I reply, "New York, Los Angeles or Disney World" they stand in amazement like I just pulled a David Blaine. We have more states than Europe has countries, as well as, climates, cultures, circumcised penises and big titted blonds... something for everyone.

Difficult to debate with people whos idea of argument is to call people names.

Having travelled extensively in my life including Montana, Maryland, Ohio and Ontario on the Northa American continent, I have to say its a beautiful country.

Just like Europe and other continents around the world, there is a fair share of jerks.

Looking above, the US has a few too, but thankfully they are among the minority, most of the Americans I've met are thoroughly charming and a delight to spend time with.

Russia too is a lovely country just don visit after November, it gets a tad chilly (-30 when I was in Moscow 3 years ago)
by Steelhamster on Wed May 10, 06 8:24pm [+]

America has some of the most beautiful and breathtaking geography in the world.

The fact that you can wake up (very early!) in Yosemite park - deep in lush forest, snow on the mountain tops and then 4 hours or so later be standing in one of the hottest places on earth (Death valley) is truly astounding.

California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona alone are worth the price of a plane ticket.

one thing: steer well clear of LA and Las Vegas unless you are an asshole. In that case you may well love them both.

You may have a problem avoiding Americans too but hey, its worth it.
by wideheadofknowledge on Wed May 10, 06 8:40pm [+]

Thank you for your comments. I'll see if I come with my friends or not, but I'll make sure I'll see a bit of nature if as you say its so breathtaking:) or maybe I won't get a visum and will just visit my grandfather in Austria then, which should also be good.
by MAMASITA on Wed May 10, 06 11:57pm [+]

Great landscapes. Interesting cities like New York. Great attactions.
by thc2883 on Thu May 11, 06 3:17am [+]

whok makes a good point. the varying climates that exist at the same time is cool -- you can be in new england in winter and have snow and 2 hours later, be in miami or key west and be in heat and tropical sun. there are places in the west where you can be snow skiing in the morning and come down the mountain and go right to the beach in the warmth and sun.
by Kev24 on Thu May 11, 06 3:35am [+]

I don't know. The US is okay. But it is not anywhere near the top of the list of countries I would like to visit.

And Felix, Eastern Europe is incredibly self-righteous. The further east in Europe the more self righteous. Russia is the most self-righteous.
