He gives very short answers, and when the media naturally wants him to expand on the answers, he gets pissy. I watch him give press conferences and it's just amazing -- if he just expanded his answers and answered in a warmer tone and with a smile on his face, he'd be viewed in a much better context. It isn't a race thing at all -- I've known and seen quite a few affable black people -- it's a personality thing. He complains about how he's hated (and it isn't a steroid issue -- he'd probably be just as hated even if he were never rumored to have juiced), but he's not willing to alter his persona to perceive himself as likable. Obviously likability (is that a word?) isn't everything, but it'd almost undoubtedly make his life easier. Does Barry Bonds realize that if he approached the media in a more friendly and open way that he'd be a lot more likable? Yes he realizes this, and he's trying.
