BUSH ADMINISTRATION GOAL: TO CREATE A DATABASE OF EVERY PHONE CALL EVER MADE IN THE U.S

How do you feel about the Bush Administration creating a massive database of every phone call, for which there is a record, ever made in the U.S.? Is this unprecedented act of domestic spying on virtually every American an acceptable price to pay in the war on terror, or is is it an outrageous abandonment of the principles on which this country was founded?

NSA has massive database of Americans' phone calls

Updated 5/11/2006 10:38 AM ET
By Leslie Cauley, USA TODAY

The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.

The NSA program reaches into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about the calls of ordinary Americans — most of whom aren't suspected of any crime. This program does not involve the NSA listening to or recording conversations. But the spy agency is using the data to analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity, sources said in separate interviews.

"It's the largest database ever assembled in the world," said one person, who, like the others who agreed to talk about the NSA's activities, declined to be identified by name or affiliation. The agency's goal is "to create a database of every call ever made" within the nation's borders, this person added.

For the customers of these companies, it means that the government has detailed records of calls they made — across town or across the country — to family members, co-workers, business contacts and others.

Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden, nominated Monday by President Bush to become the director of the CIA, headed the NSA from March 1999 to April 2005. In that post, Hayden would have overseen the agency's domestic call-tracking program. Hayden declined to comment about the program.

COMMENTS:
Wonder what in hell THAT is going to cost. Bet it'll be a lot more expensive than universal health coverage.

Ferverently againts it.

#1: It is against founding principles and rights this country was based on.

#2: It is an ineffective tool against its purported goal (terrorism).

#3: Even if the current Administration were honorable (ha!), it would onlyt be a matter of time before this capability was abused.

#4: This Administration is not honorable.

#5: The Bush team is filled with incompetents. Disaster is sure to follow.

"Wonder what in hell THAT is going to cost?" ?
I wonder who the hell's gonna make all the LOOT.

Halliburton, again?
Maybe some other Corp. owned by Rove or Cheney or Bush or the Rep.Natl.Committee??

What protects ordinary folks from these intrusions is the incredible size of this database. Why aren't most of us robbed in the supermarket parking lot? Because there are too many other targets.

You might get unlucky enough to hit the NSAs surveillance list. The odds are overwhelming that you won't.

However, if you are a viable candidate for president, you might beat the odds and get surveilled. @:>)

Outrageous. Its time, actually long past time, that the people of American demand the removal of this criminal from office. Bush, his and his entire administration should be arrested and put on trial. He has to go now!

mojo makes a good point - why spend money on this when there are so many things that need funding, but the money just isn't available. and what use will be made of this database - who will reap the benefits, financially and otherwise. this administration has to go.
remember me when they come to haul me away.....

And I'm shocked only at the fact that the "liberal media" has taken so long to notice this. I've had the heads-up on this since March '02.

wonder if any calls made by the bush family are included. doubtful. those two slut daughters of his should have their calls monitored. you know, when they call their pimps and drug dealers and all. skank ho's.

When you think about all this, those "disposable" cell phones with no name attached to them become more attractive.
by xxxxxxxx on Thu May 11, 06 2:08pm [+]

I see no need to create this data base;the N.S.A should only be spying on those people who are connected to Al Qeada.Bush has truly over stepped his bounds with this action,Congress better reing him in before the people do.

It’s not just a right vs left issue. Clinton used nsa to spy on the American people to. I’ll probably get negative karma from liberals for pointing that out but oh well.
by seon on Thu May 11, 06 5:38pm [+]

This is ridiculous. Why do they need every phone call I've ever made?

What next? Whenever I pee I have to do so in a little cup? Oh, how about whenever I take notes in class, I do so on carbon paper? That way the government can see what I've been writing. Oh and after that they can implant a chip in my brain -- that way, if I have a dream that involves something bad happening, the government can arrest me before I can harm anyone.
by xxxxxxxx on Thu May 11, 06 5:46pm [+]

I feel this is going too far. I'm all for better security and intelligence, but not at the cost of having our privacy invaded. It's no more of the government's damn business who I call than it is that I occasionally enjoy wearing a pink chiffon mini-dress and carving hornless unicorns out of soap.
After all, when we start to erode these basic rights, what exactly is it that we are protecting?
by Applerod on Thu May 11, 06 11:45pm [+]

^^ good point Applerod - just what are we protecting???
