Many conservatives believe the country is moving in the right direction, despite record high inflation & unemployment rates and a series of blunders on both the domestic and international front that has alienated us as a nation and polarized us internally.
I don’t expect an honest answer on this question. Just a bunch of rhetoric about how much worse off we’d be if a democrat was in office. Funny that our country was most prosperous when the conservatives were most embarrassed by our president.

The nation is perfect.
The nation is nearly perfect.
The nation is on the right track.
The nation is on the fast track to hell.
The nation is in hell.

I'm not a conservative but I'll comment.

Michael Savage, a conservative once said that what makes a nation is its boarders, language, and culture. Now lets observe those 3 items.

1. The boarders. The US obviously has no boarders because anyone is basically free to enter or leave the country with no penalties whatsoever (only because no one wants to do anything about it). Where are the boarders? There aren't any. Illegal Mexicans are literally colonizing southern Texas. There are parts of Texas where the majority of the population is illegal. And that's just one example.

2. Langauge. What is the language of the US? At one point in time it was English. In the past 10 years it has been English and Spanish. It has gotten to the point where the two langauges are equal. Manufacturing companies, stores, etc... have all adopted it as a secondary langauge. It's only a matter of time until they make Spanish a job requirement. So the US has no langauge. But you can't blame the government for that. I guess we can let it be economics?

3. Culture. The US has no definite culture. You can't define US culture. So that's up in the air for interpretation.

By Michael Savage's definition, the nation is on the decline. But that's just my opinion.

Personally, I think that the US went on a decline from 1990 and on. The government became so obsessed with foreign policy and other nations that it got to the point where it forgot about the status of the US.

"I'll get back to you when conservatives are in power."

Well they're certainly not in*my* political camp!

One thing I'm not clear about is how long we can continue to sustain a national debt that has increased by about 500 billion dollars each year for the past six years and counting. But I don't know economics.

I remember the Jimmy carter years. 20% unemployment and double digit inflation interest on a house was at credit card rates. I will take 4.7% unemployment and near zero inflation. Thank You

I'll not vote, of course, but echo what lcb said. This gang is not and never was 'conservative.' They just hide uner the mantle.

Explorer, you're satisfied because the nation isn't in the worst situation, just a bad one? That shows how much you expect from the government.

One more thing on the ballot. Just remember how the US was when Bush just went into office and how it is now. Well it's 3X worse
by Liberal_Democrat on Fri May 12, 06 9:54am [+]

ExplorerTwo- Just as I predicted someone was going to claim that America would be worse off under a democrat. Well under a democrat just 6 short years ago we had the highest surplus America has ever known and now under Bush America has reached a record high deficit and the worst economy since Herbert Hoover. Wake up!
by RobinGaylord on Fri May 12, 06 12:27pm [+]

^He would but that requires thinking.

The economy is actually doing very well (although you wll seldom hear that reported on CNN). Also, if you were refering to the Clinton years I have two things to remind you of: 1. The economy of the 90s was so great due the internet boom not really because of any political decisions which were made. However, if you are going to insist that politics was a major part of the great 1990s economy I'll have to make point number 2. Clinton had a Republican Congress most of his tenure. Virtually any policies he put into place he did so with their consent.
