Military. We spend mor eon our military than the next 5 nations combined. I have heard the allegation we spend mor ethan the rest of the world combined, but that may be hyperbole. In any event, we spend WAY more than anything that can rationally be justified for a non-aggressive nation.
Military (some, mostly we need to cut down corruption and inefficiency), pork barrel spending, foreign aid (including 100% of our UN fees), welfare, etc. There are plenty of small programs that are overlooked because 'ah well, it's only 100 million dollars, cutting that won't make any difference in the deficit', which is true, on an individual basis. But the US gives out lots of money in small sums that add up to a substantial amount. For instance, we don't really need to give 150 million to encourage artists to smear shit on the virgin mary, that money could perhaps be better spent paying down the deficit.
NASA a close second.
I'm rather surprised at the choice cathexis made. The biggest and most immoral expense is corporate welfare. This is where profitable companies get more tax breaks to line profits of already filthy rich heads of companies. A country needs a military. It doesn't need corporate welfare.
It is my belief that the military strength of the US is the only thing preventing a world war as of now. Countries such as Iran are reluctant to launch attacks on Israel and the West as long as the US is capable of destroying them in a heartbeat. Corporate Welfare is indeed a foolish way to spend money, as is NASA. Social Capital, health, higher education, infrastructure and Military expenditure are the 5 areas to which 90% of spending should be alloted.
I would get rid of corporate and personal welfare programs (including ss and medis). Go through cutting the millions of pork projects. Cut military spending after bringing the troops home. Get rid of regulatory agencies. That's all I can think of right now.
Welfare for the illegals and lazy people.
