SEATTLE SCHOOL DISTRICT REDEFINES RACISM:

[+] ballot by herzog
created Fri May 12, 06

According to the Seattle public schools website:

Racism:
The systematic subordination of members of targeted racial groups who have relatively little social power in the United States (Blacks, Latino/as, Native Americans, and Asians), by the members of the agent racial group who have relatively more social power (Whites). The subordination is supported by the actions of individuals, cultural norms and values, and the institutional structures and practices of society.

That is a direct copy-and-paste from their homepage. Isn't it nice that they're at least being honest about it for a change?

The dictionary defines racism as:

1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Whose definition do you think should be used?

The dictionary has it right
The seattle school district got it right

COMMENTS:
They also go on to say that emphasizing individualism over collectivism is racist.

Gotta disagree with Seattle there. According to the Seattle definition, only whites can be racist, and that's inaccurate. The dictionary definition seems spot-on.

Whoever made the change should be fired.

^Yes, in a perfect Libertarian world, we must never tolerate differences of opinion.

Au contraire, mon cranki, it's you left-wing PC types who want to muzzle speech and come up with these new doubleplusgood definitions of who can and can't be a racist.

You will note that the word "majority" is never used in the crackpot definition given by the People's Republic Education Committee of Outer Seattlania, as it would be embarrassing for them to acknowledge that those of European ancestry are a distinct minority in a large number of urban school districts across the country. Groups such as the Aztlan organizations and the Black Panthers can never, ever be racist, because their alleged racism is aimed at the "Man."

The Seattle school district board sickens me. Ebola's too good for them.
by Felix on Sat May 13, 06 2:11pm [+]

^So now people should die because they have a difference of opinion?

Lighten up, you guys.

I don't like any of those deffinitions.I would go with number two if revised as such...

*Unwarranted* discrimination or prejudice based on race.

A government or any other authoritarian figure/group can be racist even against members of thier own race. Not only that, definition #1 treads awfully close to being an absolute contradiction(therefore rendered insignificant and meaningless) because it one the one hand acknowledges differences with it's use of the word race.Race implies difference and since their are differences not all racial classifications are of equal potential in all areas of ability. This denial of apparent reality is absurd and makes one wonder just how enlightened we have fooled orselves into believing we have become.
by robotthinker on Sat May 13, 06 3:41pm [+]

Who said not to tolerate it? That person can go on believing all sorts of nonsense, but I refuse to employ them and so should the people of Seattle.
by thc2883 on Sun May 14, 06 3:00am [+]

Tolerance does not equal acceptance.
by thc2883 on Sun May 14, 06 3:01am [+]

It's not about tolerating someone who chooses to believe this way. It's opposing the way public school officials (paid for by our taxes) are forcing their bizarre and wrong beliefs on students. They have a right to believe as they like, they do not have a right to make official government policy that forces others to follow along with their beliefs.

I wonder how tolerant these people would be if they made guidelines defining good students as studious, hardworking, and christian. Then we'd hear a different song from the tolerance crowd.
by herzog on Sun May 14, 06 12:45pm [+]

And BTW, racism can be committed/felt by anyone, against anyone. Racism is not exclusively whites picking on minorities. The black panthers are as racist as the klan, but according to these yokels (and their supporters on here) the black panthers are perfectly acceptable, calling for the death of the white race is fine, apparently.
by herzog on Sun May 14, 06 12:47pm [+]

Firing someone for having a difference of opinion over the definition of a word is intolerance, bordering on authoritarianism.

And, obviously, whoever put it up there, had the approval of the the school district's administration, so this supposed conflict is simply make-believe anyway.

And simply putting something up on a website doesn't force anyone to believe anything.

MAG_afro
by cranky on Mon May 15, 06 6:08am [+]

I just went to the website of the Black Panthers. I looked at their mission statement, their vision statement, and elsewhere, but couldn't find a single instance of them calling for the "death of the white race."

Neither is correct. They are correct in noting the Power aspect; however, by specifying races, they were too generaled/ stereotyping themselves, IMO.
by Cathexis on Mon May 15, 06 6:17am [+]

Cath: do you think it's ok for people paid by the government to inflict these definitions on children? Tell all the white kids that they are the sole source of racism, and all the black/hispanic kids that nothing they can do would ever be considered racist.
by herzog on Mon May 15, 06 6:27am [+]

And if you go to the klan website they don't say anything about lynchings blacks, I guess they wouldn't approve of that either.
by herzog on Mon May 15, 06 6:29am [+]

Remember, these school officials aren't putting this up on their own website, or preaching their idiocy on their time off. They're doing it aspaid representatives of the government, making polcies that affect all the students in their district.
by herzog on Mon May 15, 06 6:30am [+]

I didn't know the US was that bad. The most politically correct nation in the world.
by xxxxxxxx on Mon May 15, 06 6:38am [+]

Well, seattle is worse than most. But this sort of thing is common along the west coast and many northern states. Unfortunately they dominate the media, so any attempt to oppose such ridiculous laws can be effectively dealt with by propaganda that makes the opposition appear racist.
by herzog on Mon May 15, 06 6:45am [+]

Where is this "social power" they speak of?
by _Beelzebubba on Mon May 15, 06 8:49am [+]

Doesn't surprise me one bit.
