COMMENTS:
As you said, the book is pure fiction and people have to understand that. How can something fictional cause such a stir? Another thing they have to understand is that the plot is actually nothing new. Things like that have been written since the middle ages. Difference is, quality was much better back then...
No. It is a work of fiction and never purported to be anything else.
^ I agree with Cathexis here. Surprise, surprise!

Yes, it is mocking and blaspheming Christianity. And, yes a bunch of numb nuts believe it is true. However, the US has freedom of speech and everyone is entitled to their own beliefs - EVEN when it blasphemes someone's religion.
Being that I religiously practice blasphemy and heresy I think I might qualify as an expert on this matter. Not to mention I have read the Da Vinci code, Holy Blood Holy Grail, the Gospel of Mary & The Woman with the Alabaster Jar By definition it is doing exactly that, To question or challenge the church or holy scripture, even in jest or fiction, is still blasphemy. When it comes to dogmatic law there is no measure of intent. See the definition: a) A contemptuous or profane act, utterance, or writing concerning God or a sacred entity. b) The act of claiming for oneself the attributes and rights of God. c) An irreverent or impious act, attitude, or utterance in regard to something considered inviolable or sacrosanct. As long as some religious figure believes this to be blasphemous it is, that is the only measure. So blaspheme fellow heretics and rejoice in your sin!
No, it's just a suspense thriller. Total fiction. That said, if the author were to make a claim that the book is absolutely fact, why would that be so bad? Why should the idea of Jesus having a wife and child be considered so repulsive to so many people? And, if the idea of Jesus having a wife and child is so repulsive to so many Christians, dosn't that prove that much of what the author says about the nature of the church and it's abhorrence for any and all things sexual, or even natural, is in fact, true? Just curious. Guess it's off to Hell with the rest of the blasphmers for me, huh?
It cracks me up how much some Catholic bishops are getting riled up over this, as though what's being put out for public display is reality in any way. I read the book. I found it in the *Fiction* section of my library. That's enough of a clue for an intelligent person to grasp, IMO.
Those silly men in red caps prancing all around and holding forth and this and that are far more absurd than the Da Vinci Code book and movie. At least it is written for entertainment and doesn't claim some divine inspiration or the other. These silly twits are mindlessly calling this and that "heresy," as though they own some kind of actual truth when they have been perpetrating rumor, fear, and madness for mellenia. Give me a break already.
If it's any good it will teach blasphemy and heresy.
Cath: "It is a work of fiction and never purported to be anything else." I remember that, at the begining of the book, the author recognizes the story is fictional, but he claims the "theories" and organisations presented are real. Anyway, I think the book is less than blasphemy: is boolshit, both historically and literary.
Having read the book, and it was possibly one of the poorest written books I have ever read, I still think it was an interesting work of fiction. However, the backlash from the Catholic Church, fuels the fire that there may be something in it. If, as they say, its claptrap, why make such a song and dance about it? Opus Die, also doesnt help its case, being an ultra conservative and secretive organisation.
^and repressive
Blasphemy and Heresy are ancient copyright-protection entities..kinda. It's time to rid the world of such anachronistic sentiments. Anything that can't tolerate a lil rib-poking CAN'T STAND ON IT OWN TWO FEET!
The entire Belief Thing is cracking w_i_d_e open and those with big time and money invested in it (like my wife, silly girl!) can't STAND to have their boats rocked by expozay and logic!!
