I think it's important to separate fanatacism from everything else. People can become fanatical about many things -- religion, politics, patriotism...

What's "normal?" What's "fanatical?" ALL religions have the capacity to produce zealots. Any time you can persuade people that you have an inside track with God, you can, IMO, convince them that this selfsame God wants them to do something. Most people in the major religions cannot be persuaded to kill in the name of their God, but there is always that handful that gives the rest a bad name.
Of all the religions on this list Scientology produces the worst fanatics.
