COMMENTS:
"Sickening" was the first term that sprang to mind, to be honest ... but "ironic" will do.
It's a crime. Time is coming to take the law into our own hands.
And we think we've evolved :p

'You're all f*cking peasants as far as I can see' - Jon Lennon
correction John*
Socialism is evil? Yes. It has been responsible for numerous wars. WW2 - the majority fought the war and the majority (of the allies and later the former axis powers) benefited by ridding the world of Nazism and the fascism of Japan and Italy. Unfortunately, it didn't rid the world of socialism practiced by the likes of Stalin. 'You're all f*cking peasants as far as I can see' - John Lennon Yes, a multi-millionaire spoke those words.
Wow, the scenario you described is so unlike all the real world experiments at communism. Because in russia, china, cuba, north korea, etc everyone was equal, there wasn't a concentration of power in the hands of the few, the politicians labored and fought along side everyone else, and there was perfect equality. Steel: look at all your attempts at communism and then with a straight face tell me all the things you criticize capitalism for didn't happen there as well, but to a much greater extent.
Hmmm mighty big talk, but still no cogent answer for why the few should suckle on the teat of privelege, while others go hungry. Time will tell for you and your cohort Felix, when your heros screw you over and over while your house is being repossessed, they will laughing all the way to the bank.
Some people complain, bitterly, when people allegedly get off topic on their ballots, but have no problem getting off topic on the ballots of others.
herz: You're cute when you are narrowly consistent. The worst governments on earth are nominally 'capitalistic democracies" (e.g., African nations, central America, etc.) but you dismiss them as 'not real examples of capitalism.' Yet the nations you laud are most successful, IMO, due to their ventures into Socialism ... including the US. Cherry-pick whatever you need to, but be careful about doing it in public where people can see the gaps.
Both ironic and tragic.
The worst countries on earth are the solidly communist ones; north korea, the USSR and red china (under mao and stalin they were the worst, better now that they've opened up and adopted some capitalism). The only prosperity the world has ever known has come from the free market, no government decree has created wealth, and socialism can only redistribute it, it creates nothing. I've said many times that pure capitalism is not desirable, that some elements of socialism are necessary, just very few, leaning more towards capitalism than communism. Now, find me a succesful communist state.
Cathexis is right, Herzog never actually answer the question posed. It's quite simple, should the few benefit from the sweat of the many? Should wars be declared without the will of the people, and should any war include on the frontline those who seek to benefit from it. As to Herzog's question, there are no successful or unsuccesful communist states. Nor will there be. There are many examples of socialist capitalist hybrids, but those cultures who just use the pure capitalist model, fail at the very basic social level.
