DOES IT BOTHER YOU THAT WE HAVE SPY SATELLITES THAT CAN WATCH A MAN STARVE TO DEATH IN AN IMPOVERISHED NATION?

Think about it. We’ve dumped billions into a technology that can allow us to watch poor people starve to death from outer space. What does this say about our priorities?
Does it bother you that we have spy satellites that can watch a man starve to death in an impoverished nation?

COMMENTS:
When will people realise its human nature to look out for ones self before considering others? Paranoia, self preservation and self interest are natural human traits. The same traits that kept us alive as a species. Of course, there ARE positive human traits that other species dont possess, but they generally come secondary to the ones our society would view as "negative".

This is why chaos and order consume us when our social controls are relaxed, even temporarily. Look at New Orleans, people being raped, looting, shooting at rescue helicopters. People become animals when order is lost, the Lord of the Flies is a good fictional representation.

We have fewer social controls in opur societies today than ever before. Thats why we have girls getting pregnant under age in record numbers, prolific drug taking, wildly fluctuating and often uncontrollable crime levels, binge drinking yobs ruling the streets of Britians cities, 9 year old boys raping 11 year old girls etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc ............

Impoverished nations must eventually take responsibilty for their own well being, as all good animals should. We managed it didnt we?
by lil_ape on Thu May 18, 06 3:21pm [+]

^I think you missed the point.
For a revolution to start you must organize people. What does it matter if I start organizing people here or if the person starving to death does? As long as I do it for the right reasons and have the resources then all the better.
by RobinGaylord on Thu May 18, 06 3:50pm [+]

Yes it bothers me a lot. People don't care though because they're all so wraped up in their own petty lives. And Lil_Ape, I think the wealthy nations and people of the world have a moral obligation to take care of the less fortunate. There are more than enough resources in the world to feed and clothe everyone and I'm sure to cure almost all diseases. I mean does the United States really need to spend about $500 Billon on military? The world collectively spends $ 1 Trillion on military. Think what that money could do. And, does some Hollywood star or some athlete really need to get paid $50 million? No, I don't think so.

^It appears you are asking a question/making a point different to the one stated in the ballot title, why has the conversation turned to talk of revolution?

I reacted to your obvious disgust that "

We’ve dumped billions into a technology that can allow us to watch poor people starve to death from outer space"

And your subsequent question of

"What does this say about our priorities?"

With an answer that effectively can be summed up as;

our priorities are exactly where nature intended them to be.

Patch

"There are more than enough resources in the world to feed and clothe everyone"

Yes, and many of these "impoverished nations" are actually rich in many resources, which they dont exploit to their full potential. Dont get me wrong, I too can empathise with the helplessness and frustration of the many good people who suffer because of their incompetent governments. But when focusing on the MACRO as opposed to the MICRO, it IS up to their governments to get their affairs in order. Britian and America werent always the rich, organised nations we are today. We created our civilisations, as these impoverished nations must. It is NOT our responsibility to do it for them, though I give my full respect to the westerners who DO try to do it for them.
by lil_ape on Thu May 18, 06 4:21pm [+]

At some point, responsibility for their impoverished nation MUST be attributed to their own actions/decisions.
by lil_ape on Thu May 18, 06 4:23pm [+]

I see your point Lil_Ape, but the rich nations could do much, much more humanitarian work than they do. Just because some countries have leaders that don't let all the aid get to the people, the wealthy nations should still do more because it could help bring about real change. Besides, look at the United States. Bush passed tax cuts that help the wealthy, not the poor. Can you imagine a family that makes well over $1 million a year and they pay far less in taxes as a percentage than a family that makes maybe $200,000 a year. Even in wealthy country's the leaders do things contrary to the greater good of the whole nation.
by patch22us on Thu May 18, 06 5:00pm [+]

Unfortunately, you have to have both. A nation must preserve its security and the US has a number of potential threats. These include far more than the terrorist ones. Most of these satellites were designed and launched to deal with cold war issues such as Russian nuclear weapons. These are obviously still needed.

This ballot question is also a bit of a false dichotomy. It isn't a either/or type of thing.

However, the fact that the WORLD (not just the US) does not value all people enough to stop hunger, poverty and genocide is an indication of the moral bankruptcy and decay of the people of the world.

It bothers me that governments allow this to continue.
by thc2883 on Fri May 19, 06 3:29am [+]

Yes, I find it incredible and shameful.

And I am amazed that we still have folks who are willing to excuse this kind of situation as 'nature,' as if content to be relegated to 'animal status' and prisoner to instinct and baser urges.

Does it bother you that we have automobiles have windows from which you can seek people begging, and soundproofing so thorough that you can't hear them?

No.

I am troubled by suffering throughout our world, but the relationship you draw here doesn't track for me.
