Here's a better idea. Stop making kids who were born in America automatic U.S. citizens. Without that, illegal mothers wouldn't get free health care from American tax payers and might start to think that having a baby in the USA isn't the only road to citizenship.
I wonder if all of these illegal baby makers are willing to tell their 6 kids that their only purpose in life was to give their parents a clear shot at citizenship.
90 percent of America felt nothing different on May 1 AKA "a day without a gardener." That was probably the greatest day of my adult life. No traffic and no shopping carts with kids inside rolling down the street.
Griffon's idea seems like a really good idea because much of the policing would be done by the business sector,thus reducing enforcement costs,which could be offset by the heavy fines.Secondly it may substancialy reduce appeal to the idea of an illegal crossing.A large scale nationwide petition would be needed if there were to be any hope with legislating it.I suspect garnering massive quantities of signatures would not be a problem at all if organized well.

I love this idea, but we should also deny all welfare and healthcare services to the criminal immigrant.
It's a great idea but who's going to enforce this? There are millions if not 10s of millions of private businesses in the US. Who's going to watch over all of them? It would be easier and less expensive to just guard the boarder with the army. And yes, give the army rights to arrest anyone who crosses. Not Bush's plan to install the army but not allow the army to arrest illegals.

This approach to immigration reform would address the problem precisely where it should be: On the people who benefit from this system.
One real advantage would be the cost savings. Although there would certainly be violaters, particularly at first from the people who have been breaking the law without penalty for years, but ultimately, the system would police itself.

Your proposal really gets at the heart of the whole issue. The people who are posturing and pontificating about the illegal alien problem are the same ones who are hiring them.
We're not doing this because the government really doesn't want to end illegal immigration. What they're doing now is more for show and to try and placate everybody.
Another way is to stop letting them have babies here. If you are not here legally then your kids cant be a citizen.
