The original ballot has been closed so I made this one.
I think that polygamy should be legal. I'm pro-choice and if people want to marry multiple husbands or wives then that should be up to them as long as the other spouse has knowledge of the other spouses. Now I know that the "moral" and "values" crowd will lash out and rant about how it will corrupt culture and society. Well, if you're against it, don't get married to multiple spouses. And I'm sure it's only going to be a minority that actually practices it.
I live in Utah although I am not a polygamist. IF a man can support all of his wives and children (and that's without government assistance), they why cannot all of the believers live as they chose and believe? About 10,000 polygamists live nearby - they seem to be otherwise law abiding, courteous, etc. They just believe differently than the majority. I'd rather see our law enforcement people focus on the meth problem than on the polygamists :0)
Hey it's like ok y'know?
Why not? Why can't two or more consenting adults decide their living arrangements and relationships for themselves? What gives the state the right to make these decisions for free citizens?
*sarcasm on* Yeah, lets just legalize forcing a 14 year old girl to marry a 40 year old man. Lets just legalize child molestation, which is what Warren Jeffs and many of the other polygamists should and will likely be accused of. Yeah, polygamy is just peachy because it promotes the molestation of young girls/boys by older men/women. I love polygamy!
Like you said, its up to the person's choice, and if its agreed and doesnt cause trouble and is within morality. But well polygamy sounds a little.. gross and unethical so im not sure about this,i guess its the people involved's choice
Government shouldn't be in the business of defining marriage. We just need a judicial system than can enforce contracts and adjudicate disagreements.
^likessugar says... their practices absolutely should not be supported by the people (Gov.), but in most cases, they are. We also have to consider... Male lions, gazelle etc.. of the African savannahs polygamize... but only the most NOBLE are allowed right of passage to breeding rights. Utah could become the new West Virginia, so to speak, if any idiot could start mass producing. Should there be guidlines... IQ evaluations, for example, before legalization is considered?!

Sorry but I am too tired to comment kids!
Mysticalknight: No one here is advocating FORCED marriage, UNDERAGE marriage, or RAPE, OR CHILD MOLESTATION. No one. And I'm not looking to hook up with multiple wives. I had one of those once, and I can't imagine the brain damage of dealing with multiple wives. All I am advocating is that the behavior of consenting adults should not be controlled by the government.
^^^Nobody forbides one to have as many women/men as he/she wants. However, marriage is a social creation, both in origins and purposes (it has a social function) therefor, as any social creation, is subject of regulation.
^Johann: Are you arguing that anything that is a social convention should be codified as a law? How about the freedom of two or more people to live as they choose? But what do I know?
Based on conservative (old) standards of what's moral and what's not, society has already been corrupted to its greatest point. What's polygamy going to harm? And polygamy would have the same marriage laws as regular marriage except that there'd be more spouses involved.
"How about the freedom of two or more people to live as they choose" Well, nobody forces one to live in one way or another. You can choose to live and love a man or a woman, you can choose to live with this man/woman or another, you can chose to live with one man/woman or more. Nobody has the right to do anything about your choise. But, when people chose to legaly marry, they do it in order for their union to be recognised by society and in order to benefit of the legaly rights given by marriage. Remember, my comment to your comment was not about legalising or not polygamy, but about why the state should specify the form in wich marriage should take place. So you see, when you choose to legaly marry, you are doing it to gain official recognition from society. Then I find the question "why should state...?" strange, because you are trying to get his recognition since he represents the society! You want the state and the society to recogize your status and to give the rights that came with this status, but in the same time you ask: "why should they give a damn?" well, they give, because when legally marrying you are asking something from them. In the end, you can marry "before the moon and stars" in any way that you want, but when you ask society to give you certain rights as a result and to recognize you as a couple, I think is logical to accept their demands as well. Rights and obligations!

"And polygamy would have the same marriage laws as regular marriage except that there'd be more spouses involved." That would be true only if poligamy would involve one man and a number of womens, or vice-versa. But when poligamy would be about a woman that is married with more men that are married each with more women wich are married..., that would be every lawyers nightmair and probabley a disaster in terms of parental responsabilities; basically it would fuck up what we usually call "family environment". And let's be honest guys: how many of you would like to share your woman with ten other guys? Would you like to be the "monday husband" or "the sunday" one?
Let's all stick with the old family values and cheat your wifes when you can! :--)

Legalized? No, but it is happening.
I have mixed feelings on this. My initial inclination is to say 'Keep government out of private lives and let consenting adults do what they want.' However ... Let's face it, when we talk about polygamy, we're mostly talking about one man and multiple wives. The economic and power aspects of such relationships would end up (practically) being a major set- back for women and their push for anything remotely resembling equality.
^ One man and multiple wives? How old fashioned is that thinking? What's good for the goose is good for the gander! As a commited feminist, I argue that if HE can have two or three wives, then SHE can have equality! Note: (I am a man, and not a wussy one, either!)

Actually, polyandry makes more social and environmental sense than polygamy. Polyandrous marriages that do exist have much less fighting than polygamous ones. Besides, healthy minded women would object as much as any man about sharing their husbands. If they don't mind, something's "not right" with them.
