HYPOTHETICAL ABORTION/STEM-CELL SCENARIO...

[+] serious ballot by xxxxxxxx
ACTIVE Tue May 23, 06 - Sun Feb 15, 09

(Note: THIS IS COMPLETELY HYPOTHETICAL.)

Say you and your spouse had been trying for a long time to have a baby. I mean, a LONG TIME. Y'all never thought it would happen, but somehow it did.

You/your wife is now two months pregnant. So far, the baby's developing as expected.

However, one of your (or your spouse's) parents is suddenly afflicted with a rare disease which could kill him/her within a month if uncured. The doctor says that the only way a cure could occur is with stem cells. Unfortunately, the parent is in such bad shape that none can be used from him/her.

There are so few stem-cell lines available that there is only one real option: abort the baby and use its stem cells.

If the parent were to receive the stem cells (which are used however they're used), the odds are very good that he/she could survive and live a productive life for the next 30+ years. However, there would be no guarantee that you could ever conceive a kid, as y'all had tried for so long.

If you don't have the kid aborted for the sake of the stem cells, the kid will be born and live a healthy life, but the kid's grandparent would be long gone.

Due to the affliction, time is of the essence.

Which do you choose?

Aborting for the sake of the parent.
Keeping the kid.

This is obviously an oversimplified situation, but just roll with it.

Basically forcing a choice between ones' parents and ones' child ... a cruel decision.

For me, I'd do everything I could for the parents, but would not sacrifice the unborn child.

Maybe the parent might live long enough to benefit from the umbilical cord tissue or even the foreskin (if the kid is circumcised).

Wow -- I'm surprised at the results right now.

Personally, I'd have the kid aborted for the sake of the parent. As cold as this sounds, if I want a kid that bad and the conventional method can't work, I'd adopt. Especially if the parent could still live a long and normal life afterward.
