Why? They haven't committed a crime. And... there isn't enough room for them.
^Just for sake of trying on the "devil's advocate" role, Fiddle, how on earth do we know the "detainees" at Gitmo have committed a crime? Oh, the government says so, and Military Tribunals are ready to "prove" it, eh?
can you name these "illegal" prisons? do they exist? where are they?
I knew someone would ask both of these first two questions. Gitmo... Military Tribunals are traditionally used for prisoners of war who may have committed war crimes, etc. That is just how it is. The people at Gitmo, guilty or innocent were found in a combat or known terrorist area. While not proving guilt, it does warrant further investigation. I'm not going to go with the "governments says and so and the MT are ready to prove it" answer. I'll reserve judgment. And, like kev, I would like to know the names and locations of these prisons rather than accusations, rumours, etc. The question can't really be answered without PROOF of their existence.
Griffen they are enemy combatants that is their crime. Guantanamo is a lot better place to live than where they come from. Talk to war prisoners from the past and see how they had to live. I am sure they would have wanted to stay in a place like guantanamo.
Their crime is that they have been labeled 'Enemy Combatants' and we, the citizenry of the US are willing to accept that designation. What an incredibly embarassing situation, we've sunk to.
