Couple allegedly beat child with a Bible

By LINDA MAN
The Kansas City Star

Clay County prosecutors on Friday charged an Excelsior Springs couple with child abuse for allegedly beating a 9-year-old with a Bible and slamming an 8-year-old into a door.

Authorities allege that Raymond Fairchild, 49, and Deborah Fairchild, 50, punished the foster children for numerous perceived transgressions such as eating too slowly, forgetting to bring the dog in, washing the dishes too slowly and not taking notes in church.

Court documents state that the children were also whipped, punched, shoved to the floor and locked out of the house without shoes or coats after dark. Authorities allege that the children were told they would go to jail if they told.

Another means of discipline included making the children squat with their hands on top of their heads, authorities said. One child was whipped because she had cried about having to squat, authorities alleged.

“A person who would hit a child with a Bible is someone who should have spent more time reading it,” said Clay County Prosecutor Dan White.

The alleged abuse occurred in late March.

COMMENTS:
The Bible does not say "spare the rod, spoil the child" like people think it does, so NO!

The closest it says to that is where Solomon say s "He who spares the rod hates his son" but his son Rehoboam turned out to be an asshole, so that's not a good quote to use...read the whole text not just a stupid quote to promote your own viewpoint people!

Lol, I'm getting the picture of someone being beaten by a Bible in my head. What if you stick your tounge out at it?

Not a good idea. It most probably will have the opposite desired effect. They'll grow up to hate Christianity and anything remotely associated with it, turning into little hatefull prechers of their own brand. I've seen it a hundred times.

Obviously not. I'll post a similar comment to what I posted on another ballot as these people are apparently using the "spare the rod" stuff.

They do not read the real meaning of that verse which is to "discipline your child". There are actually several meanings for the Hebrew word 'shebet' (rod). One is the "rod of authority", another is "shepherd's rod", and another is in reference to a king's sceptre.

The rod of authority refers to the person's position (father or mother) that gives them the authority to discipline their child.

The shepherds rod is interesting as well. One never "beat" or struck their sheep with a rod. They guided them.

Referring to the king's sceptre; this one is self explanatory.

In Psalm 23, the words "Your rod and Your staff-they comfort me" are used. Certainly being beaten with a rod isn't comforting.

In Numbers, God ordered Moses and his brother to take a rod, assemble the Israelites, and ORDER a rock to yield its water. Instead of speaking to the rock, Moses STRUCK the rock (with his rod), and he did so twice. This was a grave sin and he was not allowed to enter the promised land (Israel). That speaks to the incorrect use of a rod, of authority and not trusting God.

These people have some serious mental health issues.

Proverbs 13:24 He who holds back his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him early.

Maybe it means "Spare the rod....spoil the child!?"

As in, don't use a rod on them...spoil them!
by socal_sweetie on Wed Mar 21, 07 2:24pm [+]

^I was joking you know. I never hit my child. My parents though, believed in "spare the rod, spoil the child." In their minds, the rod was either a belt, fist, or a board. I believe that the "rod" means discipline, but without the beatings.
by RunsWithScissors on Mon Jul 16, 07 12:41pm [+]

Yes it means from early on they will think the Bible is a load of rubbish and wont have to spend years in their adult life getting rid of their dogma.
Of course I was joking child abuse is never ok.

Although people frequently quote Proverbs 13:24 to justify corporal punishment, one should also consider how the son of the man who said it turned out. (It was said by Solomon, and his sons grew up to be despised men.)

I wouldn't advise reading it though..you might get some screwed up ideas about reality.. Jewish and Christian fairytales are great, but they don't quite qualify as representing 'reality'!
