WHAT DOES FREEDOM MEAN TO YOU?

[+] serious ballot by Mithrandir
created Mon May 29, 06

Freedom is bandied around like a political silver bullet - you say the word and people eyes glaze over - you trump any argument and silence any dissentor. We send people to war to defend our freedom - dead soldiers died protecting our freedom, etc, etc.

Looking at what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, I find it hard to see how the freedom of the West is being defended by the actions of the Western governments and Western armies. In Afghanistan at least, I would like to believe that in part we are helping the Afghan people rebuild their country and gain a little freedom for themselves within the context of their own culture and religion. But I am not sure that I can trust all the political rhetoric.

This being said, what does freedom mean to you, seriously?

The right to consume indiscriminately
The right to acquire indiscriminately
The right to shout out my opinions loud enough to drown out others
The right to preserve our way of life, at whatever cost to the planet
Upholding universal human rights for all peoples
The right to think for myself and to live according to my own ethical values. within the law
The right to influence the law of the land through a democratic process
Having nothing left to lose

The right to live as you see fit with the only limitations being that you cannot infringe on the rights of others.

I'm free to travel within my country without "papers", hold a job or not, worship openly or not, Folgers or Hills, as I prefer, the list is endless. I am free. Thank you, all of the soldiers who gave their lives for me.

Freedom is something to everyperson in the whole world. It's something different to every person. Some would say it's the right to say what you feel on something. Others would say that it's the right to have complete control over your family and your wife. Muslims and southern baptists come to mind. To me freedom is a state of mind, one that is defined by me and followed by me.
