No, I've actually heard similar comments on B&W, that when the military is sent in, it should be without restrictions on it's behavior, because in war anything goes, and if you don't go all out you are at a severe disadvantage to the enemy. That sort of thinking has been used to justify Abu Ghraib, Gitmo, the secret CIA prisons, torture, etc.
Definately. You can't push people around and expect them to just take it. You can't tell the Iraqis that it's just one incident and expect them to forgive you. And the more that this happens, the worse it is for the US. These "incidents" happen all the time, it's just that the army did a shitty job covering this one up.
It's a bruise to the image we're trying to foster, that we're bringing civilization to the region. Anybody *other* than me remember that speech?
Are you kidding? John Murtha and this incident are a grain of sand on the beach. Goddamn people swallowing incidents like this through the media think it's going to make a bit of difference -- as if it is going to be a footnote in the history books.
Former Senator,Bob Kerry ordered his troops to do a similar thing in Vietnam and he ended up getting a bronze star. Google the 60 Minutes story: Memories Of A Massacre.
Is this ballot a joke? "Does pressing the brake on a car typically cause the car to slow down?" Of course this hurts the war effort, we have already seen it here with increased hostility in some areas that had been relatively docile, even welcoming before. The problem is this: Murtha does not make any f'ing effort whatsoever to recognize any of the good that is going on, and for THAT reason, I find his opinions to be completely irrelevant. Sure, he'll continue to rattle the cage and talk about how he was an marine and bla bla blah, but guess what? Current Marines hate the guy, they find him to be offensive and a pompous windbag. If he were giving equal treatment to the good and the bad, it would require him to talk for 999 minutes about the good and one minute about the bad. That's the ratio folks.
