WHY ARE MANY FUNDAMENTALISTS PROTESTANTS SO ANTI-CATHOLIC?

[+] ballot by Kentucky_Yankee

Many evangelical Protestants, often referred to as fundamentalists, have proven time and again to be extremely adverse to Catholicism. One of the most prime examples is the KKK with it's white protestants and their anti-Catholic stance. Some of my relatives are rabid Baptists and are very against the Catholic faith. Why? What are their motives for being this way against fellow Christians?

They fear what they do not understand.
They have been fed stereotypes about the Church by parents or fundamentalist leaders.
They are radical and brainwashed.
They are in the KKK
Competition among the religions
RC=HolyRomanEmpire in disguise
They view RC as idolaters who worship Saints
just another pitiful power struggle
They just dont' agree with the Catholic church's rules and traditions
Hatred of Catholics was a tradition among the English of old
SORRY, THIS POLL
IS NOW CLOSED.

COMMENTS:
That's what I believe has happened with numerous protestants. I know, because I use to be one (Baptist).

You'll find that religious sects tend to compete with each other. This isn't unique in Christianity. This isn't just a Baptist-Catholic problem. It happens in Islam all the time. Major completition and tension among the Sunnis, Shiites, Wahhabists, Reformists, and etc...

I've *never* been able to figure out the rationale behind anti-Catholic sentiment. But then, I've never been able to sort sentiment against *any* group of people, except hatemongers and pedos.

Rom.Catholic Church is the Holy Roman Empire
draped in the flag of Christianity.
sorry.

It goes all the way back to Martin Luther. This is a long tradition in the protestant community to consider the Catholic church at worst the "whore of Babylon" and at best to not even be Christian. Much of this, I believe is due to ignorance of what Catholics believe, why they pray like they do, etc. Plus, many protestants are indoctrinated in this anti-Catholic view. They don't look beyond what they are being fed. They don't question, they don't look any deeper... etc.

I was watching Kirk Camoron once on TBN (don't ask me why)and his co-host was on the streets of NYC streaming at Catholics that worshiping Saints in a idolatry and a sin.Fundies are anti-Catholic because they see them as idol worshipping heathens who should repent and only worship the trinity.

That is one of the Ten Commadents. Thos shall not have any other gods before me. Praying to man-made idols is an abomination to the Lord.

Voted : They just dont' agree with the Catholic church's rules and traditions
You have to understand Baptists and Catholics are very opposite of each other. Speaking as a Baptist, I can tell you some things I think are odd about Catholism:

1. You aren't allowed to have a personal relationship with Jesus and that's the main thing in our religion

2. You have a priest judging you and telling you how many prayers to see when it says in the Bible that no man can act as a judge.

3. You baptize infants, that have no idea what is going on or if they even believe in that religion - in our church you are baptized once you are old enough to understand what you are doing. We don't believe children will go to hell.

4. It says in the Bible not to have idols, but some of the saints and statues of the Virgin Mary seem like idols. We know you don't worship them but to us it's odd to pray to anyone but God/Jesus.

But any true Christian wouldn't look down on another religion, even if they don't agree with it. We aren't to judge.

Hate is long lasting and is often kept alive through the generations. Maybe these people are descendants of the English who killed priests during the 1600's (give or take) and have overtly or inadvertly kept alive and made a tradition of such excessive animosity.
