Basically, you're Jewish if your mother is Jewish or you were converted properly. Nowadays, the main conflict is about what "converted properly" means...

If you are born to Jewish parents then of course you will be considered a Jew, just as a child born to Christian parents is baptised/christened a Christian by the parents. Muslim children same. If later in life they chose to convert to another belief, so be it, however converting isn't too acceptable and easy for Muslims to do.

Jews and Bhuddists don't care so much about converting people, or if their kids convert. Muslims, Christians, and Hindus have a much bigger problem with this. Not sure about Sikhs
