WHY IS BUSH PUTTING FORTH AN AMENDMENT BANNING SAME SEX MARRIAGE NOW?

[+] serious ballot by Mithrandir

Pundits from all sides are saying this amendment is largely symbolic because it has little chance of getting the necessary two thirds majority in Congress. However the mid-term elections are five months away, and political timing is ripe.

So why do you think that with all the other issues facing the administration such as Iraq, illegal immigration, the price of gas, corruption scandals, the healthcare crisis, and hurricane season, Bush putting forth this symbolic amendment now?

to appease and re-energize his *base* before the mid-term election
to distract Americans from other issues before the mid-term election
because God told him to
because Karl Rove told him to
because he thinks it's the right thing to do
to raise his poll numbers before the mid-term election
to be used as a conservative litmus test
Found his 3-corner hat!

However the mid-term elections are five months away, and political timing is ripe.

What other reason could there be , with the world and the country in a mess, this is what he spends his time doing, with a little help from his friends Jerry and Pat of course.

Seriously, it is just that- smoke and mirrors, to make us look away from the issues we need to be addressing, the issues that the Administration *doesn't* want to address because that would imply that they gave a rat's a$$ about us common folk.

People can chew on that for the summer and conveniently forget about how the Bush administration has fucked up everything they've touched.

Even if it doesn’t get through he’ll still go through with it because he’s “above the law”
I’m not sure why he chooses now to do it though.

As always, to distract the sheeple.

It looks as if the issue is being used as a conservative litmus test in elections this fall.

"'It is true what this vote will do will be to help the voters identify who is and is not supportive of the family,' Dr. James C. Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, said in an interview on Monday. 'And I think those that are not are going to have to answer for it.'

--- to put it in context

"President Bush's push for the constitutional ban on same-sex marriage that is being debated in the Senate this week comes as many Republicans and religious conservatives are beginning a campaign to help lawmakers who support it during this year's elections -- and to punish those who do not," says the New York Times .
by Mithrandir on Tue Jun 06, 06 11:35am [+]

I did some thinking on this. Maybe its because the democrats might win some seats in congress and soon he wont be able to pass it. So he’s doing it now when the republicans have the “power”
by seon on Tue Jun 06, 06 5:47pm [+]

The issue was killed in the Senate today so Bush will have to dream up some other stupid idea to divert attention from his own shortcomings.
